PostSubject: Brooklands   Mon Sep 22, 2008 9:24 pm

On the way back from the BTCC at Brands the traffic on the M25 was a nightmare, so we came off at Junction 10 and worked our way towards home. But we stopped off at Brooklands (something i'd wanted to do for a long time)

I must say i was very saddened to see the state of the Grand Old circuit. Sad Sad Sad

The new Entrance to Brooklands, cut through the old banking

On the top of the Banking section (we should not of been here Embarassed )

This is what is in the middle of the circuit now (taken from the top of the Banking)

Taken from the Bottom of the Banking

In my Opinion, this should not of been able to happen.

After seeing it in the dusk, i really want to go back during day so i can then go into the Brooklands Museum.

These pics do not show it justice, you must see it with your own eyes to appreciate what the guys went through when they raced on it.

We Walked around the back of the Banking to see the drop that was on the other side, and you can certainly understand that when the cars went over the top of the banking they did not come back.

There is something about old racing circuits covered over with weeds and grass which nearly brings a tear to one's eye.

Great shots though 24.
Stupid M&S. being stuck in the middle.

I know i was really suprised, my father had delivered just around the corner from the entrance, and there was a diversion that took him through the entrance in the banking, and he could not believe where he was, or what it was that he'd gone through.

It certainly was an experience to see. I think in our ventures to the top of the banking we had disturbed a fox. When we got back to the car and going alongside the banking there was a fox just wandering around. It was quite special to see. Sadly got no photos of the fox as there was someone up our backsides wanting us to move on.

If you get chance to see it, go and do so.

Why where you getting chased off anyway?. It doesn't look very protected to start off with. You can Climb over that fence easy where M&S is.

Oh no, it's just a protected ground, with PRIVATE PROPERTY on signs all over the place. As you say though it is easy to get over the fence. It is only shin height.

This is an overhead view of what Brooklands is like now. Obviously the Orange lines are the Banking.

I must admit there is an slightly funny side to it all. The A318 is called Barnes Wallis Drive:

Ace pictures. I am actually planning a trip to Brooklands in late October, Brooklands has basically been taken over by Mercedes-Benz and its said to be amazing (their new building). Quite a lot of old GP, Le Mans and touring cars too.

The best thing: admission free. Very Happy

If Brooklands was in any other country it would be fully restored, it is after all the first purpose built race track in the world.

Ah, finally put a face to a name! :-)

Must visit Brooklands again... been years... but find these abandoned racing circuits rather depressing, to be honest.

Hockenheim is not on my list of circuits to visit anytime soon either, until they restore the proper circuit... trees growing on the racing line, what next? Brands Hatch turned into an ASDA?

Superb pictures Glenn, thanks for posting. The MX-5 trip looked fun. Smile

I actually like the current Hockenheim, although not as much as the old one.

I'm taken back to distant memories, of two tennis players in an arena and one, with a mop top hairdo, cried...

Why not?

We see great racing for DTM, side-to-side into the hairpin, bashing doors into the Mercedes arena. And surprisingly, F1 is often decent around their too.

Of course, the old track with its long straights will always be best. But I do like the current track. I'll go and hide! Wink

Right for all of you who want a absoulty brillant piece of Brooklands history you can't get any better than this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brooklands-Official-Centenary-David-Venables/dp/1844253295/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222192095&sr=1-1

It explains in detail why Motor-racing at the Surrey track ceased, and contains all long distance race results.

Its where Freddie March (grandfather of Lord March) won the Double 12 but you probably knew that all already.
