PostSubject: IndyCar 2013 race thread   Sun Mar 24, 2013 1:23 am

After an extremely long off-season, IndyCar fires back into life this weekend on the streets of Florida for the Honda Grand Prix of St Petersberg.

The 1.8 mile, 14 turn course has been the scene of some carnage in the past, a risk increased by having double-file restarts into the tight turn 1.

New for this season?

The triangle-shaped, 2.5 mile Pocono Raceway will return to the IndyCar schedule (one of my favourite tracks), and streets of Houston, Texas will be holding a race. Standing starts will debut at selected street and road courses.

EJ Viso will be driving for Andretti, and Sato has joined AJ Foyt's team (how a big Texan and a Japanese will blend, I don't know Wink ).

Sunday's race starts at about 16:40, but coverage will sadly be on shitty ESPN. But don't worry - because Justin TV will probably have an internet stream - and a very clear and good one.

I think this season will be fantastic. We'll have some accidents, payback, double-file restarts and loads of Caution's - all is good.

Thanks letting us know its on ESPN, I would not have thought to look for it over there. I wonder what the difference will be in the coverage over there. Looking forward to another season, shame Rubens backed out of indys, thought he did well for his first season.

Tony George back in charge no TV in the UK. ESPN might show a couple of races live buy I'm not paying for. It'd irrelevant. Shut it down sell Indy to the France family and stop tarnishing the indycar already.

ESPN hasn't even confirmed whether the summer and autumn races will be broadcasted, because of the BT takeover. Even though St Petersberg is live, other races won't be. Paying £10 a month for a channel which can't be bothered to show all IndyCar races live, and can't even confirm whether the whole season will be broadcasted won't get my money.

Hopefully, football-fanatic BT ditch IndyCar and it gets put back on a sensible channel.

I suspect ESPN will do what Premier and Motors TV does with NASCAR coverage - simply use the American feed.

Sky are pretty poor, they've effectively abandoned all motorsport apart from F1. I suspect F1 might get the chop too because TV ratings for Sky F1 are terrible.

The Justin TV streams are quite good now, so I'm not too displeased. Cool

Will Power is on pole, but the surprise was Simona de Silvestro qualifying third. The grid is nicely mixed: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-power-breaks-track-record-in-st-pete-qualifying/P2/

Just the guy you don't expect to crash, Franchitti is in the wall after understeering into the wall on cold tyres. Caution is out.

Helio just overtook Will Power on the restart on the outside - amazing overtake.

And we have another caution - this is clearly extremely exciting.

I like the fact that IndyCar's stall a lot, it creates caution's.

Interesting race, very happy to see De Silvestro perform so well after having a tough run last year. Hinchcliffe drove a perfect race, I if he could wonder if he could emulate Hunter Reay and be the surprise of 2013. Target missed the setup again, they seem to struggle now and then but at least Dixon picked up some points and the side by side overtake for 5th with Kannan and Viso was a picture.

Poor Helio Castroneves, a restart was his best friend….then it became his worst enemy.

It still amazes me now, Castroneves hauled up the outside of Power on a restart, had the car sideways under braking and managed to go around the outside of his teammate. I think Castroneves would have smoked everyone, but he went too deep into turn 1 on the next restart, and Hinchcliffe went by.

Hinchcliffe did drive a nice race, though, and it’s good to see a nice guy winning.

As for Hilderbrand, wow. For some reason, he kept overtaking cars under caution, then toppled Will Power’s car whilst under the caution. This DW12 is a tough car, because Power only had a flat tyre.

Power is outstanding in clean air and in the lead, but he seems to lose the rhythm, judgment and speed when behind other cars. Even when he was second behind Castroneves, he dropped back significantly after dominating in the lead. Then, he crashed himself down an escape road.

As for Dario Franchitti, that was such an uncharacteristic error from him. If anything, everyone else usually crashes but he keeps on rolling.

I have to say, that was the best ever race at St Petersberg. There was loads of overtaking, the restarts took my breath away and the finish was like an oval race. A great race.

IndyCar is back this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

For the first time since 2006, AJ Allmendinger will be driving an open wheel car for Team Penske at Barber. He’ll also be driving a third Penske entry in the Indianapolis 500. This also marks the first time since 06 that a North American has driven a Penske IndyCar.

I think the double-file restarts have massively improved the racing at Barber. The restarts are tense, and sometimes they’ll remain side-by-side until the downhill, left-hand hairpin.

Race will start at about 8 pm UK time….on some internet stream. Wink

Many in the UK wouldn't have, due to the terrible decision to put IndyCar on the invisible ESPN. Don't worry, though, Justin TV streams are now rather good. Smile

It was a rather strange qualifying session, with some key contenders deep in the field. Franchitti will start 17th, and the winner at St Petersberg, Hinchcliffe will start in 20th position.

Ryan Hunter-Reay snatched the pole from Will Power, and rookie Tristan Vautier in his first qualifying session wound up third.
It is a rather odd grid, which should make for a fascinating race: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-hunter-reay-snatches-dramatic-barber-pole-on-last-lap/

Hunter-Reay is proving why he deserved to win last year’s championship. On merit, who else has managed to beat Will Power on a road course in qualifying? C’mon Ryan!

Allmendinger is impressive in 10th, he showed up far more experienced drivers in qualifying. Note to Roger Penske: run this guy full time…

Sorry for replying so late Duckman, only seen this now. If you go onto www.justin.tv and to 'sports', you'll see a stream named '49indycar49'.

Only nine laps to go now.

For information regarding IndyCar streaming, please see the sticky thread named ‘IndyCar streaming coverage information.

That was a great race, and by far the best at Barber. Even compared to last year when they used the same car, there was more overtaking and battles.

It was mainly a green-flag affair, but the difference in the ‘black’ and ‘red’ tyres really mixed up the strategies and formed battles.
With about 15 laps to go, there was a three-way battle for the lead. Hunter-Reay was a lot faster than Helio, and easily passed him. Even faster behind was Scott Dixon, who also overtook Helio and came close to passing Hunter-Reay for the victory.

The best overtake came from Charlie Kimball on Will Power, in turn 13. That isn’t usually a place to overtake, but he launched it up the inside and put a lot of trust in Power. Power thankfully saw the move coming, but that was some overtake. Youtube it if you can.

IndyCar (with the IRL series) has been racing on road courses since 2005, and this is the best road racing since then. St Petersberg was filled with passing, and Barber was also a great race.

Thanks for the link but I did find a nice stream and enjoyed the whole race. Like you said another good race, its nice to see Helio performing. In some ways I think he is better than he has ever been at the moment, he may have lost a little pace compared to five or six years ago but seems less prone to silly mistakes although its still early in the season.

Helio’s performance became gradually worse in the latter years of the old car, but his victories last year in the DW12 were excellent. Helio was great in the early years of IRL on ovals, but his victories last year and his excellent drive at Barber show he is adaptable to all kinds of circuits – key in IndyCar.

Hunter-Reay is becoming an ever-more complete driver. Last weekend, he beat Will Power on at a road course. Since Power went to Penske, few drivers have beaten Power in a straight fight on a road course (excluding accidents, part failures, strange restarts, fuel mileage, and other factors).

However, it was the ovals where Hunter-Reay really beat Power last year – so Ryan is flying at the moment.

Oh I don’t know. The appeal of IndyCar probably entirely lies around the Indianapolis 500 – to be the Indianapolis 500-winning engine maker would be an amazing accomplishment – being involved in winning that race would give Audi a lot of credibility in the US.

Not that Audi’s LMP1 achievements aren’t amazing, but sports car racing in the US rarely penetrates to casual viewers in the States. Winning the Indy 500 could give more publicity and attention than an entire season of DP or LMP1 running, sadly.

Indycar is almost worthless at this stage apart from the 500 and even that is struggling compared to even to ten years ago. Indycars future in not a long one.

I would disagree; the Indianapolis 500 has been on a resurgence in recent years with almost capacity crowds on race day. There was a lull for the Indy 500, mainly in the heart of the open wheel split which saw even the Brickyard 400 attract more spectators. The Indy 500 attracts the biggest single-day crowd for any sport – even compared to the Daytona 500.

IndyCar has a lot of potential, and to most American’s it is the only motorsport they have a vague chance of knowing that isn’t NASCAR.

Even with the 500 growing the internal infighting and the restoration of tony George can't be good for the series though can it?

This is very true; Tony George was pretty dire for IndyCar’s growth prospects. I’m not sure to what extent he’ll still be involved. The resurgence of the Indy 500 had nothing to do with Tony George – I thank Bernard for bringing common sense and excitement back to IndyCar.

IndyCar still has a lot going for it, and it shouldn’t be forgotten that some races are still shown on ABC.

The first two races have been outstanding, so although there is still uncertainty around the series – it is putting on a great on-track product.
