Nissan will contest the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2014 with an all-electric contender that will take the 'Garage 56' entry reserved for an experimental car.

Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn announced that the company would be back at Le Mans next year with "a pioneering Nissan race car showcasing electric technology and with zero emissions".

The car has already been granted the so-called 'Garage 56' entry that was taken by the Nissan-backed DeltaWing experimental racer in 2012 and will be filled by the GreenGT hydrogen fuel cell prototype this year.

Ghosn hinted that the project could result in Nissan's first bid for outright Le Mans victory since the R391 prototype of 1999 (pictured above).

A statement from Nissan read: "The entry will test innovative powertrain technology and provide the Automobile Club de l'Ouest [ACO] and the FIA with data to enable all parties to evaluate the incorporation of this breakthrough technology ahead of a potential return to LMP1 in the future."

Nissan is one of the world leaders in electric car technology and has already developed the Leaf NISMO RC (pictured) to showcase the potential of that technology in motorsport.

Nissan global motorsport director Darren Cox, who was the architect of the company's involvement in the DeltaWing (pictured) project, said the potential to transfer the firm's electric road car expertise to motorsport was a major attraction.

"We have said all the way through this journey that we have to have the maximum relevance to our road car technology and Nissan is the leader in electric vehicle technology, so we should be doing something in that line on the racetrack," he said.

I think Nissan needs to commit to LMP1 fully, these experimental cars do nothing to enhance competition - which LMP1 needs.

Saying that, Nissan seems rather more interested in cars which don't make noise - boooooo....

its an interesting idea, but however the people in charge spin it race cars need to make lots of noise, it's part of the attraction for us fans, and i suspect the not being politically correct aspect plays to our senses as well.

Darren cox was on radio le mans just after the announcement and basically admitted this is leading to an lmp1 car. He said the reason there building this all electric car is to prove technology but also to get the as taco to move on the hybrid rule as the wasn't more freedom when they come into p1.

He also said that they want to keep making garage 56 cars. They started with the delta wing this all electric is next and more are planned.

An electric car can sound like anything it wants to though...

That's because it is based on the Deltawing, although it did have 4 wheels not 3

So its a long range Leaf then Laughing does seem funny reading what Carlos said about Nissan leading the way with electric vehicles, even though he is the CEO of both Nissan & Renault so whatever gains are made through this will just be ploughed into the Leaf and Zoe, Fluence oh and the Twizy

It looks awfully interesting, but what exactly is the point? I say that, because the design is badly compromised. No serious racing car will be that narrow at the front.

C'mon Nissan - get serious and get in LMP1.

The deltawing got world wide press and significantly outside the motoring press so there upping the anty, deltawing 2.0 electric. Can't blame them for try and it does look good but, come on nissan just build a proper p1 already/

They had this on display in the Village just behind the garages. Not so sure about it having a roof, but Nissan have obviously seen the appeal created by the DeltaWing last year and expanded on it further with this car.

If it looked more conventional, chances are no-one would really raise an eyebrow.
