Quote from Autosport's analysis of McLaren...

"In the 15 years since McLaren's last constructors' championship (it has only won one drivers' crown in that period too), it has won no end of races, fought for lots of titles and produced innovative and swift cars."

http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/5117/mclaren-time-to-get-the-basics-right/

Are they watching the same F1 as we are?!!

In my view, if we count this season as the current one 15 years ago was 1998... was it not?

1998 - Mika was World Champion
1999 - Mika was World Champion
2008 - Lewis was World Champion

How, therefore, can McLaren have "only won one drivers' crown"???

That is pretty shoddy from Autosport, but the magazine is still largely fantastic.

I stopped buying in 2003 when they gave Schumacher 10/10 for his performance in Japan after he kept screwing up at the final chicane and finished 8th while his team mate won the race. Its just like an other media, pushing a bandwagon for people to jump onto. I don't think motor sport needs lies to sell itself but a magazine might be find it tough these days so they need to appeal to a wider marker than race fans. The bright colours, sensational bullet points and headlines no doubt keep thousands of kids and tabloid readers amused.

I don't quite think that Autosport has descended into tabloid-like tendencies - that would be unfair to say. The technical analysis in the magazine is still superb and most conclusions are logical, and whilst the magazine is not as detailed as F1 Racing Mag - that comes with the pressure of being a weekly magazine.

Autosport is also perhaps too F1-centred, but when F1 is the main motorsport to people - that's understandable. To be commercially viable, they have to report and feature what is likely to attract the most sales. Plus, they still have decent grass-roots motorsport reporting.

As for bandwagons, well, you ought to read one of Murdoch's titles, the sensationalist gutter press or the Torygraph for real bandwagons...

cheers

That is why I try to stick to Motor Sport but I am too damn lazy to cancel autosport as I enjoy the occassional artical and as local WH Smiths tends to sometimes sell it sometimes not it is better to be safe than regret a 'good artical'.
