Well, it initially seems unlikely that Algarve would take that 20th slot on the calendar. However, it might not sound so mad. The Algarve circuit in recent years as slipped off the international motor racing radar, and even when there was international motorsport, the grandstands were extremely empty.

Formula 1 might put the Algarve circuit on the motorsport radar once again, and critically, put Portugal on the global radar again. Portugal is one of those Southern European countries which is extremely reliant on tourism, and it might be a wise investment from the government’s point of view.

Algarve would be a spectacular circuit for Formula 1 cars, the direction change and cornering speeds on some of the fast sweepers would be amazing.

Nice idea but they have no money and there's cheaper ways to advertise a country.

I'm there are cheaper ways, but perhaps no other way has more global reach. Not only for tourism, but to advertise to a corporate audience for investment.

I'm sure they don't have the money, but that doesn't matter, as government's borrow money left, right and centre. If the fee is £25 million a year, for example, that is a drop in the ocean compared to what government spends in other areas.
