While it is a shame teams can't honour contracts for financial reasons I'm not to bothered about Glock not being on the grid, never rated him and one of the most boring drivers on the grid.

Well, I find this a little tricky to judge. You could be Alonso or Hamilton, but its clear that nobody would achieve decent or respectable results in a Marussia. Then again, Glock has never been the most inspiring driver. After Hamilton's heroics in GP2 in 2006, Glock's title in 2007 seemed less dramatic and less deserved. He wasn't a stand-out driver then.

Glock actually achieved some pretty good results at Toyota, given the relative performance of those cars in 2008/9. In a nutshell, he is by no means a bad driver - but I'll struggle to miss him.

Marussia is a team who only deal with pay-drivers, so someone needs Aon-like dollars for a seat...

I'm not sure. To my mind, there are just blatant and obvious pay drivers, then are drivers who have cash but are very good. Hulkenberg brings money via personal sponsors, but he's extremely talented - as shown by out-pacing Di Resta. Di Resta got his Force India seat through Mercedes support, but you wouldn't call him undeserving.

Maldonado and Chilton are obvious examples where money was the main factor. Maldonado has shown flashes of speed, but he's at at Williams for his money. As much as I want Britons in Formula 1, Chilton was rather ordinary in GP2 and is only at Marussia because of Aon.

As long as the important end of the grid doesn't have obvious pay drivers, then I'm not that concerned at the lower end of the grid. I can understand why these lower teams need drivers who bring cash, but looking at F1 at the moment, there is fine talent at the top - and that's what ultimately matters. If there were obvious pay drivers at Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes and Lotus - then you've got a problem.

There are rumors around that williams and Force india need drivers with money, there are stories that force india is in big trouble because of something in the owners back ground but I believe thats not why there looking for pay drivers.

I think (prediction) one of Ferrari, Mercedes or Mclaren will take a pay driver to help fund the championship bid in the coming years.

Glock was not going to get up the grid into another team in a Marussia anyways.

Suppose it is down to Glock not being able to bring enough money to Marussia & really how much would somebody want to pay to sponsor a car that is just going to role about at the back.

I know everyone at Marussia was trying their best, but it is just to steeper climb.

Well obviously Maldonado brings in the dollors, but I'm not aware that Bottas does. It looks like Force India will hire Bianci, if they do, I'm not sure if he brings money to the team. He's been at Ferrari's young driver programme, but Force India might be free of pay-drivers. It was invertible that once Mallya's finances were looking in doubt, that doubt would trickle down to FI. However, perhaps Mallya knew of his current troubles at Kingfisher before now, because "Sahara" now provides a lot of funding to that team with the equity stake.

I don't think those major teams will strictly use "pay" drivers anytime soon. All of those teams are well-financed; either through road car sales, merchandise, engineering services/products, research activity and very valuable long-term sponsorship deals. Far from lacking finance, McLaren always seems to be broadening their revenue streams.

If I was Timo, I'd rather drive a BMW in DTM which can win races then trundle along in F1 with a team that is merely limping along. If Paris Hilton provided enough money to Marussia,, I'm sure she would get a seat.

All you need to know is that Marussia would snap her up if she waved a bigger enough cheque. Wink

Timo confirmed in DTM driving for BMW: http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-timo-glock-confirmed-in-bmw-dtm-race-seat/

I'd much rather have a competitive shot in DTM than a dire seat in F1 like Marussia.

There's a lot more paying drives in sportscar racing than anything else. But DTM isn't a bad choice for an old F1 driver to get paid doing.

It must be a great role in general. You get to drive a beast that is the M3 DTM, get a free BMW road car and get paid. It beats driving for a team that left a car on its jacks on the grid. Laughing

Giedo Van der Garde has been announced as the Catherham driver alongside Charles Pic: http://www.gpupdate.net/en/f1-news/290020/official-van-der-garde-to-drive-for-caterham/

Hmm, well, it's hardly an inspiring appointment, is it?

Van der Garde has been in GP2 for a number of seasons, yet has mainly been invisible compared to feistier drivers. I was hopeful about Tony Fernandes' team in 2010, but he's now gone and the direction of the team seems puzzling - other than to merely make up the numbers on the grid.
