It has a peculiar looking air vent on the nose, no other cars have had it.

The vanity panel was added because the stepped nose was pretty much hated by everyone

The step came about due to a safety issue with the nose being higher than the cockpit sides.

Why there allowed a raised nose at all is a puzzle to me.

Define "nose".

None of these vanity panels appear to me to make the end of the nose (ie. the bit that would hit another car) any higher or lower, so I am still just as much in the dark as to why the actual nose has to step, rather than smoothly descend in the way that it appears to with the vanity panel in place.

On first impressions, is the Red Bull the most evolutionary car launched so far? Apart from the smoother nose, I can't really tell the different - the poorly angled photos that RBR released don't help, either.

Although the McLaren was clearly one of the fastest cars last year, it is noticeably different and improved even in launch form - can't see the same progress here.

Thanks for posting those pictures CJ - the Mercedes-Benz looks gorgeous - the three-pointed star could be worth at least three tenths of a second per lap. Wink

Toro Rosso need an improvement after last year, they were largely irrelevant last season.

Caterham looks horrible... and green... green is *not* good.

Marussia looks horrible... and red and black... red and black is *not* good.

But at least Marussia have tried to make the nose look better.

Marussia for 10th in 2013!!

Interessting set of pictures on the new cars, the Marussia just looks the same with a smoother nose, I like the look of both the sauber and Torro Rosso, funny reading a point that the team boss of Torro Rosso come out and said, that they are in talks with Renault for an engine deal for 2014, this so they can be on a level field as sister team Red Bull (that they say isn't the same) so have to see how that works out. If it carries on it won't be F1 anymore it'll just be a highly expensive Formula Renault

The Marussia does look woefully basic, one can only hope that it isn't the car that will turn up at Melbourne.

I can see the logic of Toro Rosso wanting to switch to Renault engines. From 2014, the power-train package will become even more important with the increased role of kinetic energy systems. If STR were to continue using Ferrari's package, it will be even harder to relate to Red Bull with the V6 era.

Hamilton's running was particularly encouraging today - I think the Mercedes could be a dark horse and with Lewis at the wheel - who knows...

There's almost no curve in that nose at all. Seem to have taken a page out of Ferrari's book with the nose design.

To give an idea of how tight the rear end is:

Makes it look like it's towing the rear crash structure. Shocked

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seems that both Williams and Caterham are already in trouble over their exhaust designs, as both feature elements that may influence the direction of the gases more accurately.

The debate is whether or not these two particular designs comply with article 5.8.4 of the FIA technical regulations. This defines a 'cone' behind the exhaust tailpipes where it is not allowed to have any kind of bodywork.

Has anybody been watching the live testing on Sky F1?

It has been very interesting to watch. Whilst the air/track temperatures are cooler than usual Grand Prix conditions, and various programmes are being adhered to – you can still get a sense of the attitude and handling of these cars.

The McLaren doesn’t look particularly great to me. Perez in particular is struggling, with the front-end not turning like he wants to – he has to wait a long time to accelerate out of tighter corners.

Ferrari doesn’t really stand out, but I’m not sure they are concentrating on quick laps yet. The Mercedes-Benz actually looks good; it looks well balanced, consistent and has decent traction.

At this stage, the Red Bull and Lotus seem to have an edge on everyone else. Both cars have posted good laptimes without much drop-off, and both teams have good base packages.

I just wonder about the Mercedes, if the team can continue their great progress, combine that with Hamilton’s speed – it could be something to watch for…
