Something tells me that Ferrari are gonna do what Honda did in MotoGP 2011, and throw everything they've got (including the kitchen sink) at the task of winning both titles in the last V8 season. No doubt they need to after 4 seasons with no title to their name.

Having 15 drivers' and 16 constructors' championships clearly isn't enough. Razz

Thing is though, Ferrari prioritised their 2012 car during 2011, yet the F2012 was initially hopeless. If the F2012 was fast enough to compete for wins in the dry under normal circumstances, Alonso would have been world champion.

Regardless of effort, Ferrariís weakness does seem to be aerodynamics and the accuracy of their wind tunnel, or rather lack of. Until 2014, F1 will continue to be aero and chassis dominated, so one would hope that Ferrari can improve their aerodynamic performance.

Thatís true, Ferrari had technical problems with their wind tunnel, so had been using the Toyota wind tunnel in the meantime. I know Ferrari have been bitching about how aero-dominated F1 is, but letís be honest, itís been that way for many years Ė Ferrari havenít adapted well enough as other teams have.

lol! @ the wheel.

Hopefully the 2014 cars won't have the step nose.

The Lotus sponsors seem almost obsessed that one part of the car has to be all red. If it's not the wing endplates, it's the sidepods.

The red and black looks cool, I like the contrast of colours.

Apparently, the regulations should ensure that this year's cars won't have stepped noses. I suspect the E21 has been unveiled in very early-form, the Melbourne car will probably be a lot different. Those extensions on the sidepods look interesting. Ever since McLaren put the eyebrows on the sidepods, it seems like a popular area of development, with different interpretations being added.

No, Lotus have said explicitly that they believe having a "vanity panel" to cover the stepped nose would add unnecessary weight and degrade performance, therefore they cannot see any teams using them unless some way could be found to use them to aerodynamic advantage...

Don't like this car very much at all, to be honest... I reckon the colour scheme has been designed by the same person as did the horrendous ING ones....

Grosjean needs a radar guided cruise control and lane departure detection buttons - Lotus should add those buttons before Melbourne.

I love te E31, I really hope its a quick as it looks and get more wins this season, I don't think anything could look as bad as the ING Renault did though Laughing

You'd never think there was a vanity panel on that nose. Here's a pic of the actual nose and, as you can imagine, McLaren weren't very happy that this went viral. Mad

Comparison with its predecessor:

They've upped the chassis height to near maximum, allowing for more air to travel under the car to the floor area, and have also gone for front pull-rod suspension (lower centre of gravity and better airflow management).

The sidepods have been moved back for better airflow, and in turn they've adapted the back of the car to capitalise on that flow. The driveshaft and lower wishbone have been packaged in one element and the rear bodywork is heavily scooped out to make the most of the downforce-producing 'coke-bottle' area between the rear wheels.

The idea is to separate that airflow from the exhaust gases, which McLaren have continued to treat in the way they did last year, rather than using Red Bull-style tunnels.

They're one of the few teams to have small-diameter exhaust exits, which gives faster airflow and therefore more downforce when they hit the aerodynamically shaped rear brake ducts.

More evolutionary than people would think considering the non-dramatic rule changes for 2013.

I know, it is strange to just see a sole driver at the launch of a new Formula 1 cars. These cars are growing all sorts of weirdly shaped engine covers, exhaust exits, cooling outlets, front noses and wings - you can tell these current rules are being maximised before the changes in 2014.

The Ferrari has quite an aggressive design even that this stage; details like the sheer elements on that front wing and odd air outlet on the engine cover show that Ferrari badly want a winning-ready car in Melbourne.

Lets just hope the F138 isn't a shambles like the F2012 initially was...

I'm slowly warming to this current generation of F1 cars. When they were revealed in 2009, most looked awfully basic, but now all cars are getting back to having beautiful, intricate details.

Me thinks that 2013 will be another tremendously competitive year, with even Force India producing a well-developed car at this initial stage.

As for the blowing diffuser, I think all top teams are trying to replicate that effect because it was so advantageous.

I'd like the whole nose regulation thing explained to me again...

From this Autosport article, it would appear that the McLaren's nose is actually higher than it was last year, and the chassis height doesn't appear to be that different...

http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/5112/under-the-skin-of-the-mclaren-mp428/

...so why do they need the stepped nose and the vanity panel whereas last year they didn't?

The vanity panel was added because the stepped nose was pretty much hated by everyone

The step came about due to a safety issue with the nose being higher than the cockpit sides.

Why there allowed a raised nose at all is a puzzle to me.

Not only that, last year's McLaren-Mercedes Benz never had the higher chassis like the Ferrari and Red Bull. There was no need for a vanity panel last year because McLaren opted to stick with a lower nose.

Gary Anderson has an excellent tour of the new McLaren, here - he seems impressed - good package to work with: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/21283726
