PostSubject: West Surrey Racing to race BMW 125i M Sport in 2013   Sat Dec 15, 2012 11:20 am

Quote :
Former champ West Surrey Racing (WSR) has announced it's sticking with the BMW brand in 2013 but switching its attack to a brand new 1-Series racer built to the BTCC's increasingly popular Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC) technical regulations.

The move to design and develop an exciting newcomer based on the M Sport version of the diminutive BMW 125i has largely been made possible thanks to on-going support from eBay Motors. The UKís leading online automotive marketplace has announced it will continue its title sponsorship of the team for the 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

This is tremendous news, I was hoping that WSR were going to develop an NGTC BMW. The new 1-Series is noticeably wider than its predecessor , so it should be stable in the high speed sweepers, as well as being agile in the tighter turns with the short wheel base. It could be a compelling touring car; the old 320si was still competitive but was always at a disadvantage with the narrow tyres and smaller diameter wheels. Developed to the latest regulations with a much needed new chassis, this could be a championship contender...

There was the disastrous 120d, but then that wasn't developed very well and diesel never seemed to work very well in BTCC.

What a line up of brands that BTCC has. Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, MG, Toyota and Vauxhall.

I'll make it a priority to attend a round next year - Brands Hatch Indy works well for me. BTCC was amazing in 2012, 2013 could be even better, if that's possible.

Like all BMWís since Chris Bangle designed them, the F20 1-Series has grown on me. But itís a very spec-sensitive car. It only looks decent in M Sport guise, somehow it looks chunkier.

Itís certainly a more interesting design than the ultra-dull Golf or A3.

The 1M I like, I'm not sure a like the f20 it's a bit chubby, the golf is very dull as is the a3 but the a1 is really nice looking.

The A1 is nice, but extremely expensive for such a small car. Itís a VW Polo in a posh frock, which is already pricey.

The 1M is an E82, first generation 1-Series. I like the increased width of the F20, I always thought the E87 (non 1M) looked too narrow. Even though the F20 has grown in size, it still looks more compact than a Golf, which looks too much like a mini MPV. The F20 is the only large hatchback that looks like a hatchback, and not a raised MPV.

It should work well in BTCC, as the old 320siís were still competitive in 2012 despite competing against much newer cars. RWD and more grip, wider diameter tyres and a new chassis should be compelling combination.

I wish Colin Turkington would return to BTCC and drive the 1-SeriesÖ

well Colin's twitter page apparently has a BMW badge on it so hopefully that will bode well for him returning, would love to see him back in BTCC, we need a class driver to balance out all the Andy Neate's.

I did read that Turkington might be in the frame for a DTM seat, which would be a clear step up, but I think Colin would have far more fun in BTCC in the new 1-Series.

Turkington and Collard would make a compelling line up at WSR.

Alan Gow deserves a lot of praise Ė the NGTC have been a resounding success. Look at all the brands that BTCC has as a result.

West Surrey Racing' BMW 125i has been unveiled: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/105879

For some reason, I thought it was going to be a five-door. I suppose the three-door model will have a stiffer bodyshell.

I think it looks superb, the wide wheel arches look brilliant. The road car still looks a bit too narrow to me - the NGTC car fix's that...

I was expecting a 5 door as well, but that's generally cos the rules have called for that since 2007, however if the 3 & 5 door are basically the same shape they're allowed a 2/3 door. AmD can't run the 3 door Astra cos the bodyshell is a different shape.

I never knew that, it is good that the 3-door 1-Series isnít a coupe-styled hatchback like the Astra 3-door, so that it fits BTCC rules.

This 125i looks like a hatchback 1M, with the width of the front/rear tracks Ė I love that.

I think it has the potential to be very successful. The rather dated E90 320 was still winning races last year. A new chassis, wider tyres and the advantages that NGTC bring could see it fighting for the championship. With the turbo engines, RWD may be more of an advantage with higher tyre wear.
