Audi has been granted two of 16 automatic entries to the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours by organising body the Automobile Club de l'Ouest.

The invitations have been awarded based on the results of the 2012 event, as well as the European and American Le Mans Series and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The invitations represent a maximum of 16 cars out of the 55 places on the grid for next year's 24 hour endurance.

Audi Sport Team Joest has been granted two entries, one for its 2012 Le Mans triumph and one for winning the Michelin Green X Challenge in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Three invitations have meanwhile been handed to AF Corse, winner in the LM GTE Pro category in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours.

The 11 teams with one invitation are Starworks Motorsport, Larbre Competition, TDS Racing, OAK Racing, JMW Motorsport, JMB Racing, IMSA Performance Matmut, Boutsen Ginion Racing, Conquest Racing, Level 5 Motorsports and Extreme Speed Motorsport.

To validate the invitations the teams must enter at least one of the FIA World Endurance Championship, European Le Mans Series, American Le Mans Series or Asian Le Mans Series in 2013.

The return of the Chrysler Viper to the Le Mans 24 Hours was confirmed in Paris on Friday when race organisers unveiled the entry list for this year's race.

Two GTE Pro class Viper GTS-Rs have been entered under by the Riley Technologies-run SRT Motorsports team, which is masterminding the US muscle car's return to racing.

The cars will be badged as SRTs after after Chrysler's Street & Racing Tuning brand.

Marc Goossens and Dominik Farnbacher, who were both part of SRT's partial campaign in the American Le Mans Series in 2012, have been slated as the drivers of the car.

SRT director Beth Paretta, whose remit covers motorsport, said: "Our goal in our first year was to be invited. We are so excited to be returning to Le Mans; we couldn't be more excited about being back on the world stage."

The two Vipers bolster an impressive GTE Pro class that includes two factory AstonMartin Vantage GTEs and two 991-shaped Porsche 911 GT3-RSRs, to be fielded by a Manthey-run works team.

ACO sporting director Vincent Beaumesnil said: "I don't think I have seen so many great GT cars on the grid. We have five manufacturers with two cars each, who are all are going to be battling it out at Le Mans."

There are only eight LMP1 prototypes on the entry for Le Mans, including three Audis and two Toyotas.

This follows the late withdrawal of the British JRM squad, which has opted to withdraw for financial reasons, and OAK Racing's decision to focus its P1 programme on the development of its all-new 2014 car.

It will be superb to see the Dodge Viper back at La Sarthe...even though the road car is significantly more powerful than the race car!

Porsche indeed can't come soon enough. In a way, LMP1 is rapidly becoming factory team backed by big-budget car maker or nothing - clearly evidenced by so few private P1 entries.

JRM have pulled out saying they can't get sponsors because there not competing for wins

that is a problem. I'd like to see a spending cap.

That wouldn't be a bad idea, depending on the implementation. Considering all the technology that VAG and Toyota have and the cost to develop, smaller teams will always get left behind in the big league prototypes.

I've long thought that LMP1 shouldn't merely be a parade for big-budget car manufacturers. Firstly, because it means that private teams become entirely redundant, and secondly because it isn't a sustainable model. Car makers can pull out very suddenly as they please. It is worrying that other than mass car makers, few others seem attracted to LMP1 in its current format.

there are plenty of rumors of new manufacturer coming in but it doesn't happen. Henri Pescarolo always said he didn't expect to win all the time against the manufacturer but if they screwed up his team should have a change. At the moment they get beat by laps even if the manufacturer do have problems. Obviously it's rebellion not Pescarolo but the same should supply.

Stable rules would help rather than the little fiddling the aco does.

That is true, there always seems to be rumours of a keen manufacture, but it never materialises.

LMP1 definitely needs a wider pool of teams, rather than just chasing car makers. The rules indeed have to become more stable, but the technology aspect mainly suits mass car makers – not privateers. Privateers are there to race, not to showcase or promote passenger vehicle technology. Both kinds of teams have different motives, but I still think that car makers would be interested in Le Mans – regardless of the rules. However, privateers are less flexible on rules because of budget constraints.

61 Cars For Le Mans Test Day
On June 9th

The once-more traditional Le Mans 24 Hours official test day will see 61 cars taking the opportunity to lap the 13.629km Circuit de la Sarthe on June 9th, a fortnight prior to the 81st edition of the great race, which this year will also be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the first running.

The entry breaks down to nine LM P1s (including a fourth Audi R18 for Marco Bonanomi, which won't be in the race); no fewer than 24 LM P2s (22 will race); a dozen LM GTE-Pro cars; 13 LM GTE-Am cars; the 'Garage 56' entry from Green GT Technologies; and a brace of LM PC Oreca FLM09s, which are not eligible to race at Le Mans but which have been invited to "discover the finer points of the big Le Mans circuit".

Petrol LMP1s Given Bigger Tanks

The Le Mans Test Day might well see plenty of paddock comment after a further raft of changes to the balance of performance were communicated to the teams.

After the post-Spa politicking involving the Toyota team making it clear that they felt the diesel/ petrol performance balance was out of kilter the FIA Endurance Committee has dealt both hybrid and non hybrid-powered petrol-fuelled LMP1 cars a further 3 litres of fuel capacity.

That gives the Toyota TS030 a 76 litre tank, the remaining non hybrid privateers, Strakka and Rebellion meanwhile will have an 80 litre fuel capacity.

That compares to the 58 litres for the diesel hybrid Audi R18 e-tron quattros.

An earlier raft of changes saw Porsche dealt a power increase with the new, factory run new 911 RSR dealt a 0.3 mm restrictor increase.

The same change will also apply to Pro and Am 911 GT3 RSR (997) machines.

The GTE Pro Aston Martin Vantage GTEs meanwhile have been dealt a 10kg weight penalty.

No FIA mandated changes will apply to the Ferraris, Corvettes or Vipers.

The GTE-AM Prospeed Porsche will take up the 56th entry slot for the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours.

The #75 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR will be driven by Emmanuel Collard, François Perodo and Sébastien Crubilé. Perodo-Crublé and is a full season entry for the 2013 European Le Mans Series.

That brings the mix for the great race to 8 LM P1s, 22 LM P2s, 12 LM GTE PROs and 14 LM GTE Ams.

Vincent Beaumesnil, Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s Sports Manager:

“We do not regret having chosen the Green GT H2. There was a realistic possibility of seeing it at the Le Mans 24 Hours as the fuel cell, the fundamental element of the project, worked remarkably well. Basically the team didn’t have enough time to develop the car, which simply lacked adaption to racing. In its place we’re delighted to welcome the ProSpeed team, which is back for its fourth outing in the Le Mans 24 Hours. The 2013 field is now complete: its overall high-quality promises a remarkable anniversary race.”

Sun 16:06 Le Mans - Test Day: The chequered flag falls and seconds later Duval crosses the line to complete a 3m22.583s lap, which puts him nearly three seconds clear at the top of the times. Di Grassi is second and Lotterer third in a one-two-three for Audi. Olivier Pla is fastest in LMP2 for OAK Racing and Frederic Makowiecki quickest in GTE Pro for Aston Martin. Jamie Campbell-Walter jumps to the top of the times in GTE Am right at the death.

I'm recording the race, however I recommend a Panasonic DVD recorder with a hard drive as it can do 24 hours non stop. No disc changes as long as you have rhe hdd space it's just needs you to press record.
