AJ Allmendinger tests a Penske IndyCar at Sebring: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-penske-gives-allmendinger-indycar-test/

That would be quite something - and a great story - AJ get's kicked out of his Penske Cup seat, but would return to Penske in an IndyCar. It would just confirm who Roger is - a man of class and second chances.

Allmendinger would be brilliant for IndyCar's ratings.

More indycar news for 2014

Full reverse grids at double headers. This would be good in f1 too.

I'm not sure about reversing the grids for the double-header races. Whilst it initially might achieve the desired mixed grids, it would eventually be manipulated - especially because the split races are only happening on circuits where its harder to overtake - therefore track position will be very attractive.

You only need to look at WTCC to see how the manipulation isn't great to watch.

Randy Bernard was great in almost every sense for IndyCar - but double-headers were not the answer. IndyCar needs all the viewers it can get, but asking viewers to give up two different days to watch IndyCar isn't particularly attractive.

As for ESPN, my goodness - that is truly shocking, isn't it? Yes, IndyCar ratings were dire on Sky - but that was always going to happen. Sky never promoted IndyCar during adverts, and rarely showed IndyCar on their prime channels. There was never a coherent strategy or desire to make IndyCar succeed.

I can only assume that IndyCar's staff in Indianapolis had no clue about the UK TV market, much like the cluelessness of DTM's organisers. ESPN is barley watched by motorsport fans in the UK, because the station has such little motor racing. IndyCar's priority should have been to make the series as accessible as possible, yet ESPN achieves the precise opposite.

Also, it isn't even certain that ESPN will be showing IndyCar live for every race, will the channel even exist soon? Shambolic decision!

If you are contemplating what do to for IndyCar TV coverage, this guide is very handy: http://toomuchracing.com/2013/02/08/uks-coverage-of-indycar-switches-to-espn/

Hmm, dropping SS1, SS2, SS3 and SS Xtra suddenly looks very appealing. The F1 channel is covered by the HD pack. Critically, I need to hear more about ESPN's future in the UK, and whether all races will be live...

Update on ESPN:
Quote :
ESPN have today confirmed to me that they do indeed have the rights to screen every race live. However, and I quote “this depends on the programming scheduled for each day. If the race clashes with a higher profile event then the race will not be shown live but on delay.

http://f1broadcasting.wordpress.com/2013/02/07/espn-win-uk-rights-to-screen-the-indycar-series/

What absolute fuckers! Evil or Very Mad Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

So you pay an extra £10 a month, and they can't even be bothered to show every race live?

Just imagine - it's the Indianpolis 500..but we've got some ball game to show - sorry. Rolling Eyes

A bit like Sultanta, let's hope that ESPN in the UK goes bust - no choice to switch broadcaster! C'mon Disney... Twisted Evil

ESPN might be leaving the UK market! as they lost the rights to premier league games as BT and skysport out bid them.

It does seem that ESPN's future in the UK is very uncertain.

ESPN just doesn't seem like a motorsports channel. Look how irrelevant DTM now is - hidden on a channel that few want and a station that can't be bothered to show every race live.

I found out something that annoys me. If you have the Sky Sports package and want to cancel it for ESPN, you have to pay £13 a month - instead of £10 a month if you retain SS and purchase ESPN. There isn't true freedom to pick what channels you want without consequences. Why should you have to pay more for ESPN, if you ditch Sky Sports?

Its a bit like going to Tesco's and not buying any Tesco-branded products, but main brands - and you get charged a fee.

Currently, I justify the Premier Sport' subscription for NASCAR because I virtually get 4 races per month, live from February to November. With IndyCar, not only is the ESPN subscription more expensive, but you might get to watch 2 races a month, live. The outlay v the number of live races simply doesn't stack up. Plus, ESPN have essentially confirmed that they won't even be showing every race live - so the extra cost becomes even more intolerable.

ESPN should definitely quit the UK market; it would benefit fans of all sports – not at least motorsport fans. Nobody would have to pay £13 to watch one championship. When Sultanta went bust, that was a great victory for motorsport fans.

It has been announced that ESPN will be taken over by BT. I'm not sure how this impact's IndyCar coverage on ESPN. I assume the contract was signed for ESPN coverage, but BT.

If I were IndyCar, I'd try and get the hell out of there and put IndyCar on a sensible channel which motorsport fans have...Eurosport! Can't see Motors TV showing it - too busy.

Eurosport is lacking motorsport, apart from crappy WTCC.

I can only imagine that BT similarly won’t give a crap about IndyCar, they’ve nabbed ESPN to compete with Sky for football rights – not to show IndyCar. As BT will be the new owner, BT might not want IndyCar anyway.

Anyhow, a new broadcaster needs to be found….and fast.

Eurosport need serious motorsport. They've got Le Mans, but that's only one race. Plus, IndyCar races are in the evening, so all those crappy ball games and other frivolous shit which Eurosport shows should end by the evening.

After a successful test for Penske, Team Penske has announced that AJ Allmendinger will drive in two IndyCar rounds. First he'll race at Barber Motorsports Park, then he'll race at the Indianapolis 500 in May: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-allmendinger-continues-his-indycar-series-preparation

This is tremendous news. I think Allmendinger is a very talented driver. Only last weekend in an underfunded car that he never tested, he finished 11th in the NASCAR Cup race at Phoenix.

Talented racer who deserves a shot.

Now, all we need is a decent TV stream to view from... Wink
