Nissan will become the first manufacturer other than Ford or Holden to race in Australian touring cars in two decades when it joins V8 Supercars next year.

Nissan is entering V8 Supercars in 2013: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/97423

I wonder what brand and car Nissan will use? Unlike the old Skyline, there isn’t a saloon version of the GT-R. It may be a coincidence, but Nissan’s luxury brand “Infiniti” is due to be launched in Australia this year. Either the G37 Saloon or M Saloon could be suitable…

I thought Hydundai were the front runners for the third brand in V8's...

I don't think GM brands would compete against each other.

Rumors are circulating that Nissan might promote their Altimia Saloon in V8 Supercars. I think V8 Supercars needs a non-Aussie loving brand, Holden and Ford have been losing market share to other car makers like Nissan and Hyundai for a while. Just having Holden and Ford doesn't reflect the OZ car maket.

The Nissan story has been fact for a while now, but there is a strong rumor that another manufacturer will join for 2013

a) Mitsubishi
b) Dodge
c) Mazda
d) Mercedes

who might it be?

Mercedes seems to have ruled out V8 Supercars, I don’t think V8 Supercars would suit a premium brand full-stop. The series has a reputation for mainstream brands, an image that will be hard to shake off. Mercedes is well served in motor racing already, unless it’s something really beneficial, I don’t see them entering.

Chrysler’s owner, Fiat, seem to be getting cold feet on motor racing. Dodge is pulling out of NASCAR, and the US is their biggest market. OZ is a more limited market, so I think it’s unlikely.

I see the fourth manufacturer being a Hyundai brand or Mazda. Hyundai is performing very strongly, and has done for some years. Getting the Koreans to go motor racing is tricky, though. They’ve flirted with WRC, but haven’t embarked on many major racing programmes.

Mazda could be the fourth candidate, they have a strong share in the OZ market and they like motor racing. Only problem: now they’ve split from Ford, they no longer have the deep cash reserves they once had. As an independent in today's volatile market, profitability will be never more important. Whether they want to sink more money into racing, remains to be seen. Their upcoming production launches will be of critical importance – and it might be their priority.

What about a VAG brand? VAG is booming at the moment, and are not afraid to go use motorsports as a promotional tool.

Not according to this: http://v8x.com.au/index.php/9-news/445-mercedes-benz-not-interested-in-v8-supercars

V8 Supercars is really the domestic scene, not that’s it a bad thing, but I don’t think premium marque’s suit the series.

V8 Supercars must be a lot more attractive now their racing internationally. If the V8’s still only raced in OZ and NZ I don’t think Nissan and others would have been interested.

An E-Class? I would have thought its wheel base is too long. I would like to see it, Mercedes make some of the world’s finest sounding V8’s – where better to display it. It seems a privateer effort, though.

An e class would be a good fit, v8 super cars are very long. Plus there restricted to 95 decibels so it'll be a quite roar at best

Booo, the road-going 6.2 V8 with the F1 Medical exhaust system is probably not far off 95 decibels.

I suppose V8 Superstars uses 5-Series' and XF', so big exec saloons are used. Not sure why though, for ultimate agility smaller saloons would be better.

the f1 safety is probably close to 120 decibels and decibels aren't a linear scale. 100 decibels is not 5 more than 95db it's 380 more if my maths are correct.

Some road cars would embarrass the noise of some race cars, a 458 Italia would make a GP3 car sound even more awful than it does.

I think this looks pretty good. Take note, DTM, this is how a touring car should look:

Indeed, I like the idea of executive saloons as touring cars, it broadens out touring cars out from they've mostly become in Europe - hatchbacks or compact saloons. Superstars has an E60 BMW 550i, a Jag XF and a Maserati Qattroporte's - nothing wrong with them imo.

No, nor did I.

This tells the story, though:

Quote :
The FPR ownership switch follows news in August when Ford Australia announced it bought out Prodrive’s 51 per cent stake in the marque’s halo road car division, Ford Performance Vehicles.

It seems like Ford is prioritising which teams is giving factory support to, rather than officially supporting many teams as in the past.

Anyone seen the new Mercedes E63 AMG for V8 Supercars? Here: http://www.touringcartimes.com/article.php?id=8582

It looks tremendous. The road car sounds stunning, I can only imagine what the race car will sound like, with no emission, environmental bullshit that road cars must have.
