Well put, tell that to the promoters who expect a miracle from the first year. I guess in this climate though, they cannot absorb losses for too long. And the uncertainly is what probably keeps potential promoters away.

Milwaukee was on the IndyCar schedule for numerous years, the turnout was good until the track went into financial difficulties last year. The track re-opened this year, and the promoter charged higher ticket prices and conducted very little advertising - giving a low turnout. Loudon returned after a very long time.

milwalkee has been one of my favourite ovals for a long time, along with the now defunkt Nazareth (There are now houses on the site,. very sad)

Yep, Nazareth was like Loudon - flat and short.

Mike Conway has signed with AJ Foyt Racing: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/96807

Andretti now have two seats that need filling, with Conway not returning and Wheldon tragically being killed. Wheldon had signed with them for 2012.

The race at Texas is going to be a single race, as opposed to that crappy gimmick this year: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-indycar-set-for-15-race-schedule-in-2012/

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/96823

It's interesting to note that two additional races might be added to the already announced schedule, wonder what they might be? I'm really pleased to hear that Phoenix and Richmond may return in 2013, two ovals that are well suited to IndyCar racing. If Randy can also add Milwaukee and Road America for 2012 - that would be superb. One can only be optimistic!

IndyCar needs Milwaukee, Loudon, Richmond and Phoenix back on the schedule. All are virtually flat, 1 mile ovals. Yesterday I watched the 2004 IndyCar race at Phoenix, how refreshing it was – drivers were trying to out-brake each other into turns like a road course. Even in the underpowered cars, they lifted off the throttle for the corners and downshifted – bringing some finesse to open wheel oval racing.

Really hope that two additional races becomes a reality - a 15 race schedule is a bit skinny.

agreed, being a pendant again, Richmond is 0.75 of a mile.

On the schedule that SPEED has listed, it suggests that an event will take place after Fontana on 30th September. If a second date is added, as cited possible by Randy Bernard, the finale would then be in October. Still, that's too early but better than ending things in the middle of September. I wonder if that race in China will go ahead, I hope it doesn't - it'll just be another awfully prepared street track. Instead, they should go to a short oval and drum up interest where it matters - the domestic market.

You are correct Cerca, flat 1 mile or smaller ovals are very entertaining.

I think IndyCar should solely concentrate on the domestic North American market. Races in Canada work very well because the Canadians love their motor racing – both Toronto and Edmonton are well attended by locals. IndyCar has a huge popularity deficit to NASCAR, and the aim must be to claw some of that back. International races are fun, but are only likely to turn off American viewers because of the difference in time zones.

The Sao Paulo race is a waste of time, as both events have been interrupted by heavy rain – the time of year seems to be unsuitable. I wouldn’t be surprised if General Motors pushed for the Chinese race, it’s now their second biggest market for vehicles after the USA.

Sao Paulo is a must for Indy car. I know they have a few sponsors from brazil and brazilian drivers in field and its not too far away from USA. i agree they need to change the time of year.

i do think surfers paradise is must. Champ Car and CART went there and its great spot for a race track and just looks an amazing place.

I agree with you, Brazil is a market that has importance for IndyCar. However, even the local fans won’t turn up any more if the race keeps on getting red flagged for torrential rain. Brazil is close to the USA, so a trip there makes sense. A calendar date in perhaps September would be better for 2013. The F1 race at Interlagos rarely sees rain by being in the latter end of the year.

Australia is of zero importance for IndyCar, Surfers Paradise is a great track – but so is Silverstone in the UK, but the UK is of no interest to IndyCar. IndyCar chooses its venue’s based on the market – not the race track. IndyCar’s survival and perhaps expansion will depend on success in North America – all these trips elsewhere are good – but they need to be directly beneficial to the series.

the brazillian gp always used to be round 2 or 3 and was rarely anything but very hot and sunny.

That's true, the Brazilian GP used to be early on the schedule - I wouldn't call the GP in 2003 dry or sunny...

This is regarding 2013, but IndyCar may return to Watkins Glen in 2013, along with the NASCAR Truck Series as a double header: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/96842

IndyCar with NASCAR Trucks on the same weekend would be awesome, the crowd would be bolstered by both series fans – perhaps making the weekend financially sensible. It would be great to see IndyCar’s attacking those esses once again, and seeing the Truck Series return to road course racing would be a pleasure to see.

Hopefully this is a successful appointment; Barnhart was responsible for some of the craziest decisions in motor racing; like taking away Paul Tracy’s 2003 Indianapolis 500 win and going green on a damp track at Loudon.

Worryingly though, he still remains on the IndyCar board of directors. Along with Tony George coming back, they never learn. Guys like Randy Bernard is what the sport needs, we have a new car, new engine makers and new venue's in a couple of years. He cares about IndyCar.

Barnhart only had the power in race control he did because the rule book had so many ifs maybes and general grey areas, there are places for discretion ofcourse but most need to go and it looks like most will. Hopefully when the go through the rule book, certainly randy barnhardt intends to

I think Randy Bernard is sensibly and calmly putting the right people in posts so IndyCar can have a fighting chance of a good future. Tony George’s concept of all oval racing and only American drivers failed in the end. The new car and regulations will be under Randy’s direction – so let’s see how he does.

Under George’s directorship, we had underpowered, ugly cars that could only run ovals in the initial years. Glad that this year will erase any traces of George’s legacy on the race track.

I sympathise with Randy, he wants more short ovals, but making short oval races profitable is very difficult. Those Americans who bitch on Speed TV about IndyCar not having enough ovals should get off their ass and attend some oval races, it might make sense then.

A new circuit on the streets of Fort Lauderdale, South Florida could happen this year: http://www.indystar.com/article/20120106/SPORTS0107/201060322/IndyCar-season-may-conclude-Fort-Lauderdale?odyssey=tab%257Ctopnews%257Ctext%257CSports

Quote :
Randy Bernard is growing confident this year's IndyCar season will conclude in South Florida.

The sanctioning body's CEO said this week the proposed street circuit race in Fort Lauderdale can become a reality.

"I'm pretty sure it's going to happen," he said.

Splendid news here:
Quote :
Bernard said a return to the Milwaukee Mile still remains possible for June 17.

The streets of South Florida sounds interesting, I love street tracks – all the carnage and cautions whilst racing on public roads. The Milwaukee Mile is just a great track and needs to become definite, not a “possibility”. That would bump the schedule up to 17 races.

Randy Bernard is once again impressing; he knows that fans like the Milwaukee Mile. Those Americans who bitch about IndyCar’s lack of ovals now need to attend!
