The IndyCar finale is here, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway hosts the IndyCar World Championships on the 1.5 mile oval. Dario Franchitti is 18 points ahead of Will Power, but high speeds mean high risk - accidents can easily occur on these bigger ovals. Watch Sky Sports at 8 pm for the race, or on justin.tv

Slightly tricky starting positions for the championship contenders, Will Power start's in 17th and Dario starts a position behind. I didn't realise there was such a large field, 34 cars are entered - that's bigger than the Indianapolis 500 grid: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/95365

Kanaan won the pole, I really hope he can win tomorrow - winning in a team like KV would be quite something. At least in qualifying, it's encouraging to see that the top ten isn't dominated by Penske or Ganassi cars. Hopefully the new car next year will result in an even closer field.

yep 34 cars, because it's the last time that chassis will be used it dosen't matter if 28 of them get destroyed

Good riddance that it's the last outing for this car, it's hideous looking and is embarrassingly slow on road courses.

I think the outgoing Dallara just looks so, well, weak. Open wheel cars develop so quickly in terms of design and engineering, that a car with no development since 2003 is going to look awful in comparsion.

The new Dallara does look werid, but it does create conversation - as opposed to be old, ugly and slow Dallara. One other thing, the new engine should be boosted to 900 bhp on 1.5 ovals and the downforce should be cut. It's not much fun to see cars on the throttle for 100 % of the lap - that should be left for NASCAR plate racing.

argeed 900 bhp should be considered a minimum for all top flight motorsport.

A huge accident has just occurred in Las Vegas, more than 15 cars involved with cars upside down and on fire. Power got collected in the accident, which effectively means Dario is now a 4-time IndyCar Champion.

Pippa Mann doesn't look in great health, being airlifted to hospital. I like red flags, but this accident looks genuinely terrifying.

Edit: they just showed a replay, fuck, the cars that flew up in the air - holy crap.

Just seen a couple of vids. Will Power's onboard is quite scary. Neutral

13 cars involved in the accident:

Quote :
The crash was triggered when Sebastian Saavedra's Conquest Racing car clipped James Hinchcliffe's Newman/Haas machine on the run into Turn 1. Saavedra got loose in Turn 2, and this triggered further collisions, with Will Power's Penske car was one of many to fly high into the air after being left with nowhere to go.

Many of the cars caught fire during the crash, including Jay Howard's Rahal-run car, which burnt fiercely, and Power's championship contending machine.

Most concern centres on the condition of Dan Wheldon, whose Sam Schmidt-run car suffered a huge amount of damage and was covered up by course workers at the scene.

Yes indeed, Will Power went upside down then for good measure, got launched into a fireball. Hindsight is obviously a great luxury, but this is not the first time this kind of accident has occurred. Running 220 mph + so close is always so dangerous, if the drivers were forced to lift off the throttle in the corners - at least they wouldn't run side-by-side continuously like they do in packs. Maybe they should add more power and cut downforce, making it impossible to drive flat out in the turns?

The drivers seemed to be driving more aggressively than usual though, three-wide even in the turns.

RIP Dan,

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Hope everybody else is ok as well.

The footage onboard just before the crash happened cut away thank god.

Thankfully these events are very rare these days but when it happens it still has the most heart wrenching effect on the sport we love so much

The footage on Wheldon's car was shown. A wheel hit his helmet after he hit the catch fencing.

Something was immediately suspicious when Wheldon's car was covered up, and the other 14 crashed cars were not. What a great driver the world has lost, a two time Indianapolis 500 winner and an IndyCar Champion.

The pack racing in IndyCar on big ovals and the restrictor plate racing in NASCAR leaves zero room for error, one driver's wrong turn can end up being a whole pack's problem. I think it's about time that IndyCar made it impossible for cars to run full throttle for a whole lap, everybody wouldn't be stuck in a box and wouldn't be side-by-side for so long like they are now.

Frankly, NASCAR plate racing should have been banned ages ago too. Nothing really exciting to watch with everybody full throttle, until all hell breaks loose.

I got to see a different side to Dan in his commentarys and was looking to seeing in race more than ever before. His record in Indy speaks for itself. A terrible loss to the sport in every way. Rest in peace Dan.
