New regs for LEMANS 2012

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/95261

2012 ACO/ FIA Technical Regulations Published

Safety, Fuel Equivalency and Hybrid Technology are at the core of the 2012 technical regulations for ACO rules racing in the Le Mans 24 Hours, the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Le Mans Series and American Le Mans Series now agreed with the FIA.

Safety

It’s clear that the accidents that befell the pair of Audi R18s at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours have made a far wider impact than the considerable ones suffered during the accidents themselves.

Following the accidents the ACO and the FIA Safety Commission have looked again at the safety of all cars competing together with the manufacturers and constructors and have carried out new tests to improve safety levels, “the first priority of the FIA-ACO regulations”.

The following measures will come into force for the 2012 season:

- The dorsal element on the engine cover, the shark’s fin, will become mandatory on all LM P1, LM P2 and FLM prototypes

- Openings will be made above the front and rear wheels.

- To improve rearward visibility (with the exception of the LM P1s), the size of the rearview mirrors will be increased, and they must be equipped with a night mode.

- Rear view mirrors will be fitted with an electrical adjustment system that enables the driver in the cockpit to alter the rearview mirrors to meet his needs.

- A camera system at the rear will be mandatory on LM GTE cars and allowed on all the others.

Fuel Equivalency

The ACO and the FIA “carried out a wide-ranging study to analyze the performances of the cars, and then to decide on the appropriate measures to be taken.”

A number of tools were used in the context of this survey: readings by timing systems specially installed at Spa-Francorchamps and at Le Mans, some of which the teams entered for the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 km (7th May 2011) and the Le Mans 24 Hours (10-11 June 2011) were unaware of, the information provided by the data loggers installed on the cars this year and all the times recorded on the different circuits.

In addition, team/ manufacturer engineers were contacted and asked to provide under guaranteed secrecy all the technical information about their engine.

Finally, all this data and analysis were restudied, interpreted and validated to calculate the new equivalences with the following results

- All the refuelling equipment will have the same flow.

- No modifications will be made to the petrol engines.

- The performance of the diesel engines will be pegged back by around 7% by decreasing the size of the air restrictors and the supercharger pressure.

- The diameter of the diesel engine air restrictors will be reduced from 47.4 mm to 45.8 mm for engines that have a single restrictor, and from 33.5 mm to 32.4 mm for those engines that have two.

- In addition, the supercharger pressure of the (diesel engine) turbos will be reduced from 3,000 to 2,800 milibars.

- The fuel tank capacity of diesel-engined LM P1 cars will be reduced by 5 litres (65 to 60 litres).

Hybrid engines

With hybrid technology already a reality in the world of endurance racing and the factory teams on the verge of committing their resources to the emerging technology the ACO/ FIA have refined their regulations in this area too.

- Release of energy is allowed on the front wheels but only above 120 km/h.

- Safety measures concerning the specific brakes for hybrid engines have also been defined.

Vincent Beaumesnil, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s Sporting Manager:

“Every year we progress by carrying out analyses to establish the equivalences between the different engines. The groundwork carried out with the FIA demanded in-depth research. Our main objective was not to put everybody on an equal footing in terms of performance (lap times), but to define the true potential of each of the competing technologies.

"In terms of safety the work carried out in collaboration with the FIA and the manufacturers – who made a decisive contribution to our research – will reinforce safety even further. I can only say that I’m delighted with the efficient and rapid technical teamwork between the ACO and the FIA.”

Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, FIA Endurance Commission President:

“The closeness of the collaboration between the FIA, its Endurance Commission and l’Automobile Club de l’Ouest, his highlighted by the excellent work that has been undertaken by all parties since the announcement of the new FIA Endurance Championship on June 3rd. This bodes well for a successful 2012 season when technical innovation will marry with sporting excellence to provide a memorable inaugural championship for so many fans and industry stakeholders."

The new regulations will come into force at the first event on the 2012 calendar reserved for cars complying with the ACO technical regulations governing the Le Mans 24 Hours.

that looks pretty good to be honest. This is the first time the diesels have been pegged back and the petrols haven't. The only thing I don't like is the prototypes ahven't had a big downforce reduction to meet the new lower power level's

Downforce is beging to blite endurance racing the way it's blited f1 for so long.

Down with Downforce, out with aero, wings are for aeroplanes, etc, etc

Audi Unhappy With 2012 Regulations

The Technical Regulations announced by the ACO for the 2012 WEC have caused substantial ripples amongst the current factory teams with the reductions in the diameter of the air restrictors, the boost pressure, and the tank capacity of diesel vehicles plus changes to the rear aero of LMP1 cars.

Even smaller tank volumes apply to hybrid drives, together with a new rule that recuperated energy may only be used for a boost to the front wheels at speeds above 120 km/h. The ACO has also announced that there will be modifications to the aerodynamics of the LMP1 vehicles.

Audi have gone public on their concerns with a recent press release containing a brief interview with Audi Sport’s Technical Director Dr. Martin Mühlmeier

The ACO thoroughly analyzed the performance of the LMP1 models with gasoline and diesel engines once again and has announced some drastic cuts. Individual air restrictors in diesel engines will be reduced from 47.4 mm to 45.8 mm (-3.37%). The boost pressure is to be reduced from 3,000 to 2,800 millibars (-6.6%). An engine’s performance is therefore expected to fall by approximately 7%. The volume of the tank is being reduced by 5 liters to 60 liters (-7.69%). As the Technical Director of Audi Sport, what do you think of these changes?

"As far as we are concerned, these changes don’t make sense. Gasoline and diesel engines were already rated fairly, as demonstrated by various measurements. It is all too easy for the general public to overlook the fact that the teams that currently use vehicles run on gasoline are nowhere near reaching the full potential of gasoline engines and vehicles as laid down in the regulations. Until now, the ACO had a good idea of what this potential was. But now a different point of view has taken precedence."

Can you already say what effect these changes will have on the number of pit stops during the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

"They will have some very unfortunate effects. The changes made to the fuel tank volumes are no longer based on sound science. Since 2007, LMP1 vehicles with gasoline engines have been able to carry 90 liters of fuel and diesel vehicles have carried 81 liters. This was fair as it equated to the different fuel values of the two fuel types. But this year, the diesel tanks were reduced to 65 liters and this will be reduced further still to 60 liters in 2012. What’s more, hybrid vehicles have to carry another two liters less. But this absolute figure of two liters dates back to when the volume of the tanks was still 81 liters. In other words, these two liters represent a much higher percentage now that the tank volume has been reduced to 60 liters, and that’s unjustifiable. To put it into practical terms, hybrid vehicles may well have to make a pit stop one lap earlier than the diesel vehicles without a hybrid system at Le Mans in the future. How are we then expected to make the spectators understand the technological advances being made?"

Hybrid drives are allowed to transfer their recuperated energy to the front wheels too, but only at speeds in excess of 120 km/h. What does that mean?

"It means that, with a hybrid drive, it’s not possible to pass on any traction advantages gained from tight corners to the front wheels. So in this scenario too, a hybrid system is unable to offer an advantage. And the less useful a technology is, the more questionable it becomes as to whether it makes sense to invest in such systems."

There have also been a number of changes in relation to safety. There is the rear fin and then there will now also be obligatory openings above the front and rear wheels. Are you happy with these changes?

"I am always happy to see the safety of the vehicles being increased. But checks need to be carried out to determine how much safer they are and whether there are actually any safety improvements at all. The fin dimensions are only being marginally changed. But the openings that now have to be above the wheels are a lot more serious. They are supposed to prevent a vehicle from losing contact with the ground on one side when the vehicle is at a large heading angle and therefore spinning. This is certainly the right idea in theory. But these openings unfortunately reduce the vehicle’s stability on the straight because its center of gravity shifts forward, thereby increasing the likelihood that the driver will oversteer. In other words, the risk of the vehicle spinning out of control is actually increased."

How would you sum up all of the changes being implemented in 2012?

"We have made it known to the ACO that we do not agree with some of the steps they are taking. The ACO has systematically turned the 24 Hours of Le Mans into a forward-looking laboratory, has often played a pioneering role, and has, together with the automobile manufacturers, therefore made some major contributions not just to motorsport, but to automotive developments in general. But it is now trying to strike a balance by putting the performance of relatively old vehicles and engines on a par with cutting-edge developments. And as far as we are concerned, this does nothing to promote technological progress!"

Audi and Peugeot are among the 17 teams to have been granted automatic entries to the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours by organising body the Automobile Club de l'Oeust.

Entries are determined by results from the 2011 season, with Audi earning one automatic place in LMP1 by virtue of its victory at Le Mans this year and Peugeot as a result of its Petit Le Mans win.

The 17 automatic entries also include one LMP1 invitation each for Dyson Racing and the Muscle Milk Aston Martin Racing team, which finished first and second respectively in the 2011 American Le Mans Series.

Rebellion Racing and the Pescarolo Team, the champion and runner-up squads in the 2011 Le Mans Series, also earn automatic invitations.

In LMP2 Le Mans class victor Greaves Motorsport earns two invitations, with Petit Le Mans winner Level 5 Motorsports and Strakka Racing qualifying for one entry apiece. Pegasus Racing, victor in the Formula Le Mans category of the 2011 LMS, also receives an LMP2 entry.

Corvette Racing and BMW Team RLL meanwhile both qualify for two LM GTE Pro entries off the back of their 2011 campaigns, while Larbre Competition and Krohn Racing are among five teams given automatic invitations to GTE Am.

AF Corse received the highest number of entries, as victory in the LMS GTE Pro class and at Petit Le Mans helped earn four invitations.

The ACO announced that its automatic selection process represented a possible entry of 23 cars from the maximum 55 places are available.

As revealed by AUTOSPORT in June, it has also granted an additional entry to the DeltaWing project in the interests of promoting new technology.

The full list of entries for the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA World Endurance Championship will be published on 2nd February 2012.

Pescarolo Team Complete Driver Line Up

Seiji Ara has reportedly been confirmed aboard the Pescarolo Team Dome Judd for the Le Mans 24 Hours, the 2012 race looks set then to be the 2004 overall winners seventh Le Mans. Ara last raced at Le Sarthe back in 2009 aboard the Team Navi Goh Porsche RS Spyder.

Ara will join Peugeot Sport refugees Nic Minassian and Sebastien Bourdais in the Dome.

Jean Christophe Bouillon meanwhile appears to have rejoined the team where he enjoyed race wins galore aboard the Pescarolo Team's Aston Martin AMR One tubbed, but otherwise Pescarolo designed, Pescarolo 03. He'll join Julien Jousse and Manu Collard in the similarly Judd engined machine.
