IndyCar returns to road course racing this weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California for the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma. This twisty course with a lot of elevation change has produced no repeat winners in seven years, making it a hard race to predict based on past races.

GP2 Champion Giorgio Pantano will be driving for Dreyer & Reinbold, temporarily replacing Justin Wilson after the latter had an injury in Mid-Ohio practice. See the race at the slightly later time of 9:45 pm (start time) on Sky Sports or on www.justin.tv.

Yup, there are few straights and many corners flowing into another, leaving few big braking zones. Still, it's a marvellous circuit layout.

A Penske 1-2-3 in qualifying, yikes: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94058

Hinchcliffe was super impressive as ever; the fastest non Penske or Ganassi car.

That was a truly, truly terrible race. I think only an LMS race could rival that IndyCar race for sheer boredom. Nice to hear Tony Kanaan in the booth, but apart from that - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Barley anybody passed for position.

On a track that is tough to pass on already, they used the shorter chicane for the final turn - eliminating a possible passing zone.

indtcar was even more boring than the f1 race. At least there were a couple of overtakes in f1. No matter how easy they were.

Is it over? Oh, I'm still in pain. Bring back the endless yellows and idiot driving.

This is my thinking too; the show was electric in Toronto. Yes, there was stupid driving and a bunch of wrecked cars. But hearing Will Power bitching about Dario, and all those accidents/cautions were thrilling to watch. People complained at how unprofessional it looked, compared to possibly the biggest snooze-fest ever in the history of motorsport at Infineon - I'll take Toronto any day. Neither is ideal, but Toronto was entertaining.

IndyCar's decision not to run the proper final turn, except for restarts further worsened what was always going to be a stale race. What a bunch of crap that there was no run off, so they didn't go around the proper hairpin. That final turn has a SAFER barrier and tyre stacks, plus NASCAR uses that turn - and they are H&S all over.

sears point is a very nice race track, but run in that configuration nothing will ever overtake on it.

using the chicane rather than the fast (and fantastic) sweepers is stupid and using the short hairpin means there's going to be an overtake you have to use the full loop. arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sears Point is one of the nicest layouts in the world imo, its a perfect NASCAR venue but they use the short course - not going through the Carousel. The ALMS races were pretty interesting when they used to race there too.

Yes, you are exactly correct. That crappy chicane before turn 11 hinders overtaking if anything, and the proper final hairpin needs to be used. With the amount of downforce that open wheel cars have, there aren't many big braking zones on the track with no long straights for effective slipstreaming. I have no idea why IndyCar doesn't go back to Road America, a much more suitable track for open wheel cars with longer straights.

road america is one of the great race tracks in north america. Indycar there would be very popular.
