>>A rumor is making the rounds about the direction the ACO's 2014 regulations will take. It is our understanding that a outline is being passed amongst the teams and manufacturers that proposes what effectively is a fuel energy content formula to start in 2014. The proposal allots 1500 liters of gasoline, or alternate fuel equivalent (diesel, methanol, etc.), for Le Mans. The energy content equivalency volume would be determined by the ACO. For a historical reference, in 1990, Group C1 cars were alloted 2450 liters for Le Mans. C2 cars were allowed 1650 liters. But most interestingly, the 2014 proposal allows for the complete freeing up of the engine regulations. But we can imagine the comparative draconian fuel allotment (compared to C1 in 1990) will drive engine capacities down not too far from what's being seen today. Obviously hybrid technology would play right into this as well.

No mention is being made at the moment regarding chassis regulations.

I'm sure this will divide people, split between those who feel the sport should be doing more to be more environmental, and those who think the race should be won by the car that can go the quickest for 24 hours.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what the ACO decide, but I don't think it would be the worst move in the world.

Whatever the rules its all about how fast and durable the winning car is, back in 1985 the Joest Porsche 956 beat the works Rothmans cars by being more fuel efficent as well as quicker. Group C is still incredibly popular with fans, so a similar rules package 20-30 years on could well work out.

I agree whole heartedly, although I think most people would admit that Le Mans is now a 24 hour sprint race compared with years gone by. However, I am as big a Group C as there is, and if the racing under these new regs is the same as back then, then I don't think many people would complain.

Also with Jaguar and Porsche planning returns, it might feel even more like the 1980's....
