well of course they do, aparantly for 2011 your only allowed to overtake in a 600 metre area of one straight

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/89260

well with the moveable wing anyway

does this mean there are going to be penaltys given out for overtaking outside the overtaking zone?

You know I was thinking about this before reading the article. With a car having up to 15 mph more then another with the rear wing adjusted with KERS, then surley drivers will have to be extremely careful when it comes to braking?

And if the Pirelli's soft tyres do not last very well as is believed, then the braking zones towards the end of a race could be eye-opening. With reduced mechanical grip from the tyre, going too deep into a corner could be a frequent occurrence. only the most astute drivers will master it. Especially as the car may feel light down straights with less drag, then suddenly the downforce returns when the vent closes for braking, which again could change the balance and feel of the car.

So basically, Narain Karthikeyan is fucked.

Doesn't matter, all the adjustable rear wings could be identical, but a car behind an opponent could have up to a 15 mph advantage in a straight line with the rear wing vent and KERS. The car in front cannot defend from that, he's a sitting duck. 15 mph is a huge difference in speeds.

your actually right, the formula for better racing, and actually a more open rule package is a simple one, more power less grip. that can be applied to all motorsports. add in longer braking zones and you actually get racing worth watching.

Top speeds towards the end of straightaways will increase significantly with the combination of the rear wing being adjusted and KERS. That will increase braking zones, and with far less durable tyres (at least it seems from testing) - overtaking should be quite healthy in 2011.

Bahrain has a number of big stops from high speeds, so it sort of makes sense to have a 600 metre limit for the go-faster aids. But, on circuits such as the Albert Park track in Australia; braking zones are not even that severe due to top speeds not really matching the likes of Bahrain, Monza and Montreal.

Iím talking about 2011, which year were you talking about?

I wonder if the FIA will allow the teams to extend the seventh gear ratio? With the 18,000 rpm rev limit, there will be no more RPMís in order to overtake with the additional speed from the rear wing and KERS. Plenty of times in the last couple of years, drivers have got slipstreamís and closed in on opponentísÖonly to find that they hit the limiter and the final gear doesnít allow for any more speed Ė thus they cannot make passes.

Iím sure the FIA know this, but the final gear ratio will have to be extended if we are to see the desired effects of the adjustable rear wing and KERS.

the 18,000 rpm limit so be gotten rid of. No need for that kind of rubbish.

Well, all engines now have rev limits from the governing bodies across racing. But its like the rev limit has strangled the noise of the engines slightly, they are naturally designed to howl past 20,000 rpm - like they did in 2006 with no mandatory limit.

most series don't have a rev limit set in that way unless there feeder series or single make and therefore imposed by the manufacter.

18k is too, when was the last time one blew up because it was revving to high? f1 engines should always blow up, well at least 6 in every ten should blow up. 18k should be a minuimum, idol speed should be 18,000 rpm.

To be fair, 18,000 rpm is way, way higher then other racing car engine.

18k is higher than everything but motogp and one or two other things. But none of them are limited by the series, they are limited for funding and physics.

i think the only was forward now is a minimum of 18k idol speed.
