Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo believes that European Formula 1 races should be started later into the afternoon, as opposed to the traditional time of 2pm for the majority of events across the continent.

The Italian’s comments come as he considers the time inconvenient when taking into account the lifestyles of many Europeans.

“I don’t think it’s good in July or August for a race to start at two o’clock, when most people are lying on the beach,” he told German publication Bild. “Football matches begin at five o’clock or later.”

This is absolutely fantastic, I agree. Amongst the general public and the casual viewer, who usually watches TV at 1 pm in the summer? Not many I suspect. It's entirely logical to have European races starting in the evening, that is when people are more likely to be watching TV - hence watching F1.

Also, evening races look spectacular and for some reason, they seem to be open wheel versions of destruction derby. All the Singapore GP's have been wild, maybe at night the drivers are more feisty? The more accidents and safety car periods, the better.

It's the same in NASCAR, there are big accidents and cars get set on fire when races are held in the night. I think that's appealing to average joe. And now we have brainless people like Karthikeyan and Yamamato back in F1, we could have a thrilling show.

actually, maybe it's a good thing. it means plenty of tv space before hand to watch motogp and portscar racing before falling asleep in the afternoon during f1 and thus being fresh for indycar, alms and nascar in the evening.

no they don't, it's because there rare they feel special once every race is at night the one race in the day will look amazing and the night races will look as shit as currently do.

.

Absolutely I agree, the diehard fans can watch their specialist motorsports in the afternoon when nobody else is about. Then during peak TV viewing time (the evening), F1 is broadcasted – the only motorsport that average joe might watch. That means F1 gets more viewers as a result of being broadcasted at a time when the most people watch TV.

i don't think they get that many more viers being on at a more prime time, but even 5 more sets of eyes on motorsport is a good thing.
