Very interesting read about the new IndyCar director Randy Bernard, and how he has transformed some parts of the sport already: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-back-from-the-brink/

I would love a healthy IndyCar, with Chevrolet and Lotus (the real Lotus) joining - that has to be a massive vote of confidence. Along with the new cars for 2012, which won't be spec-standard cars.

Plus, all those crappy big ovals have been replaced for more smaller, short track ovals.

Where did you see that Sky are not showing IndyCar?

If that's true, then Sky has gone from showing IndyCar, NASCAR and A1GP all live; to showing no motorsport live at all.

Trust the crappy Murdoch media. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Thanks for posting the links.

To be fair, the IndyCar season doesn't start until the end of March with the St Petersberg opener. So there is a lot of time for something to be announced. NASCAR's TV home is often only announced weeks before the first race, as it was this year.

However, Sky Sports motor sport coverage has diminished each year since 2009. The network could be re-branded 'The fooball & cricket show'.

I think this would be ideal for Eurosport to bag, its a shame they are not. Loads of European drivers race in IndyCar, and the style of racing is similar to European racing on the road courses - so the audience wouldn't just be limited to die-hard IndyCar fans. But, general racing fans as well.

even formula struggles to get those people, there's diehard fans like us, there's motorsport fan who like maybe f1 and btcc for example but nothing and those who might watch f1 is Lewis or Jenson is winning. Indycar might pull in the second kind but it'll never get the third kind.

I think IndyCar has an okay following in Europe, its shown all over Europe with live coverage. I'm not saying its popular by any means, but put it this way: show a Euro racing fan a road course IndyCar race and they might be interested - because they can relate to what is happening in the race.

Overall though, I think Sky potentially dropping IndyCar is due to evil the Murdoch empire just not giving a crap about minority sports, and just showing but the masses want. Hardly a 'sports' network with that level of diversity.

what your describing is a group 2'er, maybe follows a little bit of motorsport but not much. The casual tv view not a chance, the casual top gear viewer not a change, the casual f1 viewer no chance.

Not paying for ESPN, not even considering it. 11 additional per month for just one channel is ridiculous. Not sure why a lot of series keep on going on this channel, surly other networks like Eurosport have a much larger viewing base because they are available on Freeview, Sky Digital etc as standard?

I can accept 6.99 for NASCAR, and that's two major races in one weekend

The WRC seems to be divorcing its TV partner every year. First Motors TV coverage was supposed to be brilliant, not enough viewers, so now only after a year its on ESPN. It'll be on the Discovery Channel next.

discovery channel (well turbo) would a be a great place for live motorsport

i hadn't consider indycar to espn, if it's not on sky it'll be on there probably

eurosport isn't on the freeview package, it was on the top up tv thing, but it's not on there either now.

Europsport used to be on Freeview when I had it.

I find it difficult to envisage IndyCar being ESPN, they show a lot of other sports in the evening - when IndyCar races commence in UK time.

that is true, but you know like i do, they don't care about motorsport, but they don't want anyone else to have it.

I agree, channels like ESPN want the TV rights to minority sports but then restrict actual coverage. Just what is the point of that?

It happened with DTM too, I haven't got ESPN but the schedule appears on my Sky TV. DTM is often not shown live and just dumped for something else not involving motorsport.

they do it to try and get more customers, a bit of this and a bit of that. but they don't care about a lot of it and so it's gets pushed out of the way for things they do care about.

Looks as if IndyCar is staying on Sky Sports for this year. Sky Sports lead motorsports presenter Keith Huewan, has more or less confirmed it on his website:

Hi keith, any news on whether sky will be showing live indycar in 2011? Really hope they dont drop it affter all these years of showing it, just when the series is on the up. i think that in a couple of years it will be as big as it was in the mid 90's. sunday evenings wont be the same without you!!

Keith replies on 1st February 2011:
Let's put it this way, without any official confirmation yet, I'm going out to Barber for the test! Official news will be right here as soon as I get it. Thanks for your support David

http://www.huewen.com/index.php?p=1_12_Letters

He wouldn't go all the way to the test just for the fun of it. That's good though as I already have all the Sky Sports channels, cannot be bothered with all these channels that you have to pay extra for, except Premier Sports.

IndyCar will be on Sky Sports and in HD for two years! http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/89330

Superb news. Phew, nothing to worry about then.
