Thatís a rather poor article with few concrete facts or sources, but it wouldnít surprise me if GAME became a much smaller, therefore sustainable business or went into administration. Consumers of video games are not particularly loyal to particular retailers, all most care about is which can deliver the quickest or is cheapest. I find new games at GAME very expensive, a lot of the time at full RRP. Amazon, Asda and others simply sell for less.

They have too many stores as well, my town has two Ė which are never particularly busy. They also pointlessly own Gamestation (who errr, also sell games and consoles).

Now virtually every large retailer sells games and consoles. Without a real USP GAME is toast.

GAME is a vulnerable business because it hasnít diversified its risk; they havenít branched out to other product lines. By only selling games, itís essential that they sell a certain number of games/consoles. If they donít healthily sell games, they donít offer any alternative products/services to substitute that.

HMV isnít performing brilliantly, but at least theyíve started to sell other profitable products so they arenít so reliant on CD-based music. It is sad, but unless a retailer has economies of scale and sells a variety of products/services Ė they will struggle. I reckon any small or medium sized retailer will need to concentrate on service-orientated products to survive, that will give them a USP. Trying to sell what Wal Mart, Amazon, Tesco, Dixons etc sell is a fruitless exercise. But, a business that offers a personalised approach with a strong USP may just be profitable.

So, it looks like GAME is going to file for administration. It is a shame, because choice would be eroded if GAME disappeared Ė GAME is still a big player in the retail video gaming market. I think they opened too many stores, too quickly. My town effectively has three GAME stores within half a mile of each other Ė its lunacy. I know other towns that have too many stores too, video games are popular, but even healthy demand cannot warrant many stores so close to each other.

Then, when you consider fewer games are being sold in physical shop's and the costs of running Gamestation Ė theyíve made poor decisions.

GAME should have focused its business model on mainly online, with only successful stores in core towns/cities. That way, their overheads would have been cut considerably, whilst retaining their store customers. Now, they have a lot of liabilities and itís hard to see anybody taking on the whole business, some other rivals might cherry pick certain assets though.
