PostSubject: PS3 issue - help   Sat Apr 03, 2010 9:27 am

Whilst playing my PS3, NASCAR 09 froze. Which was fine, that occasionally happens. But now, the system is not reading any disk whatsoever when I restarted it.

I was wondering if there is any way of fixing this, is it a common issue with a simple solution? I would really appreciate anybody's help. Neutral

I am not sure. Does any other disk work? if just Nascar 09 might be a disk problem. if not you may need a new PS3

if no other discs work, DVD, CD, Blu_Ray, Game disc you could try a CD lens cleaner (one of them ones with little brushes on them).

sounds like the lens may have gone if nothing at all will work on it, the only thing you can try is stand the PS3 in a different position & see if it works then but if it does eventually you will need to get a new drive or get it repaired, i don't know if you can send it back to Sony like you can 360's to MS.

Playstations are well known to have lens drive issues going all the way back to the Playstation, i had to use my Playstation up-side down so that it would read the disc's.

Hi Big-Al, I've tried cleaning the lense with a lense cleaner but that hasn't worked. I rang Sony's Playstation helpline about an hour ago, and they suggested some solutions to my issue. But none of them worked, this means that I agreed to pay 50 for a fully refurbished console that Sony own - in a straight swap for my own.

I think that this is a great good deal, because I just want a console that works, and paying 50 doesn't seem like a bad deal. A new PS3 is 250, and the second hand PS3's that I have seen were more then 50. Delivery is free, and the refurbished console that is in full working order has a five month warranty with it. In the 15 years that I've owned Playstations, nothing has ever gone wrong. So I'm not that pissed off, but obviously, I'd rather not fork out 50 then have to.

Paul, I tried other discs and the system wouldn't recognise those discs either. Smile

I think you got a good deal.

Well yes, the data will obviously be lost. But I'm okay with that. The disadvantage of not having memory cards, I suppose.

Shocked i wouldn't be ok !

i know you can take the drive out, but i'm not sure what would happen if you put the drive in a new console, you know it the data will work with it, at least MS allow you to transfer the data over to a new drive.

personally i would just take the drive out anyway & let them take it back.

Its not a new drive Al, its a completely different console that I'm receiving - a refurbished console. The only game that I really care about my data, is for main Gran Turismo and GTA games. I'm annoyed that my data on GTA 5 is going to be lost, but hey ho. Maybe its a good thing that GT5 hasn't been released. Razz

Sounds like Sony have reduced their exchange price for a refurb. A few months back it was 135 and two weeks ago it was 80.

Also it's 3 months warranty on a refurb Sav, not a big deal but quite a pisser, should be 12 months IMO.

Also, hard drives cannot be swapped. Your old HDD will not work in the other machine, it is tied to the machine that it is in. If you have a USB stick, bung that in and throw your game save files onto it, only takes a few seconds and then you can just copy them onto your new machine when it arrives.

BTW, if you want to know what the problem is, its 99% the bluray drive lens which stops it reading either bluray films or PS3 games. Bung a DVD in it Sav, if its the bluray part gone they usually still read DVD's (and PS2 games if you have a 60GB machine).

Hi Stu,

glad to hear that Sony's refurb prices have been reduced. I found 50 reasonable, especially compared to buying a pre-owned console. A Sony person told me that the warranty was five months, if its three months then I suppose I don't mind. It is nice to have some sort of warranty, the last thing I want to happen is for the refurbished PS3 not work.

The USB suggestion is very good, I do indeed have a USB stick. I'll save that data onto it right away. I've tried normal DVD's and Blu Ray discs, none of them are recognised by the console. But from reading a couple of other forums, this is not an uncommon issue with the fatter, older-spec PS3's.

Cheers for the advice Stu. bravo

The refurbished PS3 got delivered last Wednesday. Only had the chance to test it over the weekend, it works perfectly - thank goodness!

I'd like to thank Stu for his suggestion about transferring the data to a USB Stick. It means that I can continue my career progress on NASCAR 09, much appreciated. Smile
