cheers
Argentina is good news. Must look at my budget this year and see if I can afford a flight to San Luis!

At last they have finalised the calender so that, although there are not as many rounds confirmed, it all looks workable.

Durban makes sense. Maybe not the greatest circuit in the world, but a great city for tourism etc., so maybe a wise move from the promotional point of view.

All we need to know now is what teams have entered and what cars they are using. I don't expect 2010 to be the greatest year in GT1 but it lays foundations for the future. Hopefully a European based GT2 championship will be where its all at if the right level of entries are received, although it needs some variety rather than the standard Porsche vs Ferrari battle. Even so GT2 has never been boring.

the calendar is fine, it's the cars and the races and who's running it.

1 hour races isn't enough and with 2 driver is just stupid

The cars are all the same as five years ago nothing has changed except there going to be a bit slower.

Stephane Retal is a moron

and then they have given away there biggest race of the year the spa 24 hour to have 2 times 1 hour races before it starts.

Durban is brilliant, its a horrdenous track and quite inappropriate for many racing cars. But we will have safety car periods, glamour, glitz etc.

Does anybody remember when A1GP used to race there? The hairpin would be blocked on most opening laps by a crash. zero bravo

Just making the championship a joke tbh, Ratel is an absolute muppet and the sport would be better off without him tbh.

here are the cars and teams for the crap fest

http://www.planetlemans.com/2010/01/17/fia-gt1-world-championship-6-brands-12-teams-24-cars/

6 cars, 3 from pre 2009 (corvette C6R, Aston Martin DBR9 and Maserati MC Hammer) and 3 new cars (including the Nissan GTR and Ford GT and adding the Lamborghini (iirc) Murcielago)

3 of those cars arn't in prodution any more (the Ford, the Lambo and MC Hammer) leaving the GTR as the old new car.

SO IF THIS WAS THE BEST RETAL COULD COME UP WITH WHAT WAS WRONG WITH LAST YEARS REG?

That calendar is deeply dissapointing, why announce a schedule with a numer of rounds outside Europe, then cancell them? Abu Dhabi and Durban would have been great. I don't think the series deserves its world status, what is 'world' about it? Its the same old FIA GT, with some fancy branding.

I do however, like the idea of having shorter races. Long-distance endurance racing is well served, with LMS and other national sportscar series. I doubt average joe want to sit in front of the TV or track for 5 hours or so. If the cars allow it, FIA GT could be a series where more action-packed battling took place, not long-drawn out strategies. There is actually a market for this, I don't see many sportscar series at this level with sprint-style races. But, no Ferrari's or Porsche's?

I don't give a suff about average joe he's a toss pot. What I care about is good racing and a well managed series and fia gt isn't. Btw that the gt2 calendar. As for long distance vs short races there are a couple of long races and a million short ones no one cares about

You might not care about the average viewer, but in making a series so specialist, it only appeals to a narrow and limited audience, with no opportunity to grow. So the business never really expands.

FIA GT has fine racing, in terms of battles and overtaking. I don't get your point regarding good racing. With regards to long races, again, they only appeal to the hardcore fan - like 24 hours of Spa. Perhaps, and I don't know the organisers reasoning, they are trying to create a championship that is more accessible and bearable for the broader public.

Put it this way, LMS offers hardcore fans what they want. Britcar races are long, and so are so many other sportscar races. In an attempt to differentiate itself from the competition, FIA GT is looking at a new approach to make European sportscar racing more appealing to the general public. That market has more potential, then just limiting yourself to specialist audiences. Its all well being subjective and stating what you like, but if you look at the wider picture, the organisers strategy just may be successful...

I think something needed to be done about the GT1 cars because not many people were running them and they were expnesive to run but was the ALMS way of doing thing by "moving" GT2 to be the top class in GT and having GT3's/Challenge class as the entry level becasue there is alot GT3 cars out there. From Aston martin's to Morgans to Audi's.....

The thing with FIA GT there was nothing wrong with it. 2hours races were fine, 24hour race was fine just need few other tracks.
