PostSubject: BTCC - Knockhill   Tue Aug 11, 2009 9:55 am

The British Touring Car Championship heads off to its annual visit to Scotland this weekend at Knockhill circuit. This circuit always throws up fantastic racing, and with bad weather often affecting races, expect that to have a massive effect on the championship standings if rain does occur. Mr Turkington with his RWD car won't be sitting so pretty if that were to happen...

Knockhill is one of the BTCC events i've yet to attend, wanted to go for years now, never managed it, gonna have to just bite the bullet and go one year, even though it's so far away.
Ironically enough the weather has been fine the last 2 years, arent these Thommo's last races for Dynamics this year? He'll want to go out on a high.
No ideas whether Martyn Bell is gonna be back yet, when i spoke to Paul at Snetterton, he was at home, couldn't even walk so probably not.
Just keep fingers crossed for Paul O'Neill, he could spring a surprise here.

Has anyone on here been t Knockhill before. Not just for the Touring cars but for any other event?

I don't think the btcc needs wet races this season. I think the action has been great without out, Infact rain would spoil it imo.

True, the racing this year, just like every year has been great - no matter what the conditions are like. But I reckon wet conditions could turn the championship battle on its head, with Plato benefiting... Razz

The Oulton and Croft races with Turks out front were a bit dull, but there's usually plenty of battling a bit further down, so we don't need rain to liven things up, however when it does rain we do get some great entertainment. Gio's pass on Thommo at Croft was fantastic.

Will be a small grid for Knockhill, as well as Liam McMillan (still got engine woes - ie hasnt got working ones), and Alan Morrison, now we'll be short Adam Jones, James Nash and Martyn Bell. Martyn isnt a surprise as Paul O'Neill said at Snetterton that he couldn't walk, so 2 weeks isn't a lot of time for his knee to heal, hope he can be back for Silverstone. So only 15 or 16 cars i think, could be a good chance for points for the tail enders if Plato keeps taking people off!!!

Plato on pole for race 1, does this mean he'll have Adam off when he passes him??

Race 1 was fairly boring, Matt Neal made himself look like an idiot. But I think that was a racing incident, everybody wanted the inside line and eventually someone had to pay. Plato drove a class race

Loads of bashing and nudging in race 2, Giovanardi drove superbly, his ability to make up positions outstands me, its almost as if his presence in the rear view mirror scares drivers – Shedden was dispatched within a few laps. The speed he carried through the chicane was quite something, he overtook a number of BMW’s purley from his chicane-speed advantage. Neal seemed to make up loads of positions, I think Plato would have won that race if it had not been for his technical fault though.

Herbert was pretty quick in the test that he done, but in BTCC it is more about your ability to race. Lets see, I really hope he does well but that Honda Civic is not exactly quick compared to other cars. He should be in a BMW instead. Razz

Race 3 soon. Smile

Amazing race 3, what a drive from Plato - from 17th to 2nd!!!! He went past everybody so quickly. Smile Yet again, the Vauxhall drivers were bashing others out of the way. Rolling Eyes Matt Neal's contact with O'Neil too excessive imo, Neal had the corner anyway so there was no need to bash O'neil all the way. Rolling Eyes Angry

Plato passing Matt Neal made up for it! Twisted Evil I feel very sorry for Plato, he would have probably won all three races if he had not of had that engine mis-fire.

I sense that Gio is going to beat Turkington to the title... Sad

Caught Race 1 and Race 3, there was plenty of good action on show throughout all the races that I watched, seemed that Knockhill was a good track for these types of car to race on.

Got to agree about Plato in Race 3, the man was absolutely on fire during the race, he didn't hang about when passing people and that enabled him to get up to second. Clearly the Chevy was the car to have over the weekend as Mat Jackson performed brilliantly all weekend too.

Races 2 and 3 were superb action, Plato had the speed to have won all 3 were it not for problems on the green flag lap on race 2.
Good to see Mat Jackson have a good weekend for a change, he's not been that lucky all year, certainly since Thruxton. Tis boiling down to Gio and Turks now for the title, Matt Neal now has to support Gio. He came through the field well in race 2 after starting at the back. Plato must be rueing the punting Turks move at Snetterton, he could have been a lot closer in the title race.
Good drive from Shedden in race 1. Collard was up to his old tricks in race 2, pushing Gordon out at the hairpin, was good to see Gordon retaliate and push Collard off half a lap later. After what happened at Snett Rob should know better!!
Paul O'Neill did well again, 3 top tens including a fifth place is a great result.
Thommo must have been gutted starting from race 3 pole to end his last BTCC meeting (of the year) in 6th, but the Civic didn't seem to have the pace all weekend.

I can see Turkington losing the championship lead and the championship going to Giovanardi. Turkington is getting little support from Jelley, who appears to still be adapting to touring cars. Where as in the races Giovanardi can be more aggressive with his FWD car and his teamates will probably act as mobile chicanes for Colin in the final races of the season. We saw at Knockhill how Giovanardi makes up so many positions, he will win in my opinion.

I agree the momentum is with Gio, and he can rely on his teammates to help out, Jelley still isn't really in a position to do that for Colin. If we get good weather for Silverstone that that will help Colin, and of course the 3 tracks left are all wider than Knockhill so if Colin is near the front he might get repeats of Oulton and Croft.

True, Knockhill has never been a RWD track. You only need to look at Neal's and Giovanardi's kerb hopping to see why. Silverstone should favour Colin's BMW, and rain has to be considered too. If its like 2008 then that could be a disadvantage for Colin. I think Plato deserves the title the most though, he has adapted so well to the Lacetti with no testing - it is quite something.

I don't mind who wins it. It's been another great season which will hopefully go down to the final race of the season.

Hopefully it's down to the very last race as well, Then have the riders still in with a chance of the title to start from the back, A bit like back in 1992 at Silverstone.

Sadly though I see Matt Neal having a big say in where the title ends up by spinning people off mostly someone who happens to drive an Orange BMW.

Neal will probably drive into Turkington like he did with O'neil. Rolling Eyes Funny how when somebody crashes into him the stewards are red hot.

The soon Vauxhall leave the better, they just bully everyone out of the way. I hope for a down to the wire title finale, I'll be there. Smile

Plato is still too impulsive though, crashing in to Colin in race 1 at Snett was a waste when he had the quickest car, you can't imagine either Gio or Turks making the same mistake if they were in his position.

True, although Neal would do that. Razz Razz Razz In a way I think Plato can still win the title, he has nothing to lose as he states, and the other two could get caught up in their own mess by battling each other...

Been a great season so far, I think Herbert may well struggle to be competitive in the Honda in the coming rounds. Matt Neal still bugs the crap out of me though! If anyone else did the moves he does on a regular basis there would be toys thrown, points issued etc!

Every Brands Hatch Indy round he does the divebomb up the inside going into Clearways. RARELY have I seen him do it without contact yet he still always does it and always seems to get away with it!

He is the most sly and dirty driver out there imo, that award could have gone to Plato easily before 2009, but his dirty-ness is really showing this season, bashing anyone out of the way and getting away with it. I agreed with Nash's penalty at Snetteton, but with all the ramming the Vauchall's do its a wonder that none get excluded from races.

He'll probably go back to Dynamics next season so his dad can get all angry and influence the stewards. Plato sometimes admits that he is a bit dirty and too pushy, I like that honesty - Neal just acts like he never does anything wrong. Angry In the same team Gio outclasses him. thumbsup
