But these are racing cars, forget what average joe uses on the street. Wink And anyway, more petrol cars are sold than hybrids - so petrol is more relevant! Razz Razz

Coupe prototype designs could disappear from the Le Mans 24 Hours as the result of new rules planned for 2011, reports this week's AUTOSPORT magazine.

Draft 2011 rules communicated to manufacturers and constructors last week will ensure that "no one in their right mind would build a closed car", according to Aston Martin Racing team principal George Howard-Chappell.

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest revealed that it is planning to remove the power break given to coupes when the new Le Mans engine formula comes into force the year after next.

LMP1 and LMP2 coupes are afforded larger diameter air restrictors than their open top counterparts because they are forced to run air conditioning. This reflects the fact that an air-con system saps engine power.

"There will be no incentive to do a closed car, and you need that because a coupe is more work," said Howard-Chappell. "There is a small aerodynamic advantage in running a closed car, but there are so many negatives.

"You have to engineer doors, there is the question of additional weight and keeping the screen clean. It is a much more complex car."

Peugeot team manager Serge Saulnier also criticised the move.

"There needs to be an equivalence because of the power [sapped by the air-con] and the complexity of the system," he said.

He also questioned the rule change on safety grounds.

"It is stupid to push people to make an open car in terms of safety," he said. "We believe that a closed car is the safer way."

Autosport have confirmed that the support race for the 2010 Le Mans will be the Group C cars again, including a Sauber C11 as driven by Michael Schumacher.

That's confirmed my attendance next year then Very Happy Very Happy

Nigel I'm scared of sportscar racing because it's dangerous Schumacher.

i wonder how hell do with more horsepower under his right foot than any of the f1 cars he's ever driven?

If Schumi signs for Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix, he may end up driving the Group C car!

The most powerful car Schumi's ever driven was the Ferrari F2005 that was believed to be producing a 1000 bhp at the end of the V10 era (and the Honda engine),. Most powerful for Nigel, must be F1's turbo era, with way over a 1000 bhp.

Saw the Sauber at Goodwood this year, what a cool car. Cool

On every computer game I've played, it also says that it produces 700 bhp, and although Gran Turismo is not the most realistic game out there, its power outputs are. Maybe the Aussie one was a tweaked C9?

it might be a little, i know you can turn the rubo's on a group c car up. there is a lap done by mark blundell during qualifing where the bust gage got stuck to maximum which is 1400bhp iirc it took pole bt 5 seconds or something.

I doubt an normally aspirated racing engine, in those days would have been capable of that level of BHP anyway, unless you seriously compromise reliability. Apart from NA V10 F1 engines, most other cars with over 1000 bhp have been turbo-charged.

it was a 5 litre turbo charged v8 built by mercedes. And during a practice session did 248 miles per hours (400kph) only the wm being faster. I believe there is only one f1 car to travel faster than that

It did.

It also seems that this is an older "first" practice run too... I have seen other photos of the car with a funky rear wing. That is one strut of carbon fibre and white in colour.

the car with the white vertical plane on was the speed car that did 253 mph or was it 254? That one pictured was earlier before that but after the runs at (i think) edwards air force base on the main run way.

not sure

All i know is that it is impressive that an F1 car managed it, but even more impressive that a sportscar with the added weight, less aero etc,etc managed it at a proper road used by cars and trucks.

Why did the FIA have to interfere with the N138 and add chicanes Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

whats more impressive is the sauber did that in 1989, in fact most of the top cars were doing 240mph down mulsane.

As for the fia, well letys just say that it had something to do with a mr BCE and his circus. As at the time Sportscar racing was more popular and had been more interesting for a while. The 2 and a half mile rule was dreamt up with the sole purpose of killing le mans off and leave it open for Mr BCE. The same thing happened to DTM aka ITC which was doing the same thing, it was getting bigger crowd and more tv viers than Racing I and was put a stop too. The world portscar championship had the same fate.

Indycar was tony george and IMSA gt was toyota. There was nothing with a history left and in came MR BCE and gobbled it all up, the manufacters, the drivers, the people and the sponsors.

I think there are some think i'm bitter towards Racing I you have no idea.

It is a shame that those chicanes were added to the Mulsanne straight, the straight is no longer that special, considering the home straight at Monza is also long. I can only imagine, but reason why the cars were capable of those ferocious speeds, is that the prototype cars were trimmed out for the long straights.

Prior to the chicanes, aerodynamic efficiency was more important then overall downforce levels, because compared to the full throttle sections, they were not as many corners which were taken at half or no throttle. The sportscars had to be as slippery as possible, so its not surprising they reached over 250 mph. Where as at the average F1 circuit, even though some tracks such as Spa and Monza have long full throttle sections, they feature too many corners, and it is in corners where the most time can be gained Ė which causes drag. Today, the F1 cars are doing 220 mph at Monza, but if you were to trim an F1 car out, specifically to reach the highest speed along the start/finish straight at Monza, Iím sure it could go faster then 220 mph. But, most F1 circuits require compromises in set up. A car cannot just be trimmed out for top speed, because there are too many corners where downforce is crucial.

As for the world sportscar championship, there is an unfounded belief that the series was more popular then F1 at the time. Well thatís a load of bollocks. The world sportscar series was barley ever broadcasted on terrestrial television, so if it was more popular then F1, why wasnít the sportscar series broadcasted regularly, like F1? TV broadcasting is the easiest and most accurate way of measuring the accuracy of the popularity of a series, and the WSC had crap coverage. Itís the same situation today, every F1 race is broadcasted on the BBC, and very little of LMS races are shown. F1, in the late 80ís and early 90ís also had a much bigger schedule then the WSC, so it wasnít like the organisers had significantly more demand from customers then F1 had. WSC in 1986, had good attendances, but overall, they did not exceed F1ís attendance figures.

The underlying reason why the WSC imploded, is because despite the FIAís attempts to curb costs, costs dramatically rose because the rules were so open. Great for innovation, but crap for privateers who didnít stand a chance, then eventually, the manufacturers left because of the open nature of sportscar aerodynamics. You can blame who you like if it makes you feel better, but if you want the reason why the WSC ended, look at the series itself. Unsustainable spending with ultra extravagant rules Ė recipe for disaster.

Bernie won and screwed over sportscars, and I quite like that. F1 now rules the fucking show and is top dick. Ha ha ha. Razz

He also has something in common with Fisichella I believe, one of the very few drivers to never score a point for Ferrari in Formula One.
